Can I put a storage area in back to back seat frame??

I have a 16' 1984 bayliner capri bow rider. I really want to get some more storage area. Would I be able to cut a square in the back to back seat frame and add a hatch?? Just like the enclosed picture.

You can (I think you would want to reinforce the opening), but if your seat bases are like mine, you won't gain that much space.
