Can i remove Check Valve from crank shaft bearing carrier in block OMC V4

Help guys i need to remove or the the very least check if the check valve works on my Johnson V4
It is in the block, Its the centre bearing carrier.
I have circled it in red on the pics
Also should i be worried about the wear on the carrier ?
