Hi all newbie here with a problem so be easy on me please.

Just had marine shop replace all bellows, trim sensors, and shift cables. Short version of the long story is the shift cable inner core is now broke.

From everything I can find prior to removing the outdrive you MUST be in forward gear to remove the drive. As luck will have it when inner core shift cable broke it left me in neutral. My question is what do I need to do to get the outdrive to slide off if it is not in the forward gear position.

Looking at the diagrams it looks like it should come out taking the shaft plate mechanism with the outdrive due to the inner core being broke. But because Im new to this I dont want to create a bigger problem.

Advice

Secondly can I just replace the inner core or will I need to replace the shift cable assembly?

Great forum here

Hard to believe a core just broke, on page 2A-6 in this link
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Techbk/94/94hsa2.pdf
on the right hand side just above "do not run engine" disconnect the slide as shown and give it a pull, see if the plastic part just slides off.Because someone forgot to tighten the 2 setscrews

Remove the lower gearcase first. The shift shaft on the lower will come out of the shoe in the bell housing and you can then remove the upper drive shaft housing without a problem...

The inner is not available separately, you would have to buy the whole thing, but if all the other gear is new, just slide a new inner into the existing outer...

But most importantly, why did the cable break?

WOW thanks for the fast response:D

Bt Doctur - Yes it broke about 4?' from the engine. Right now Im puzzled why?

Don S - I swear I tried searching:redface: but I thank you for the helpful link.

achris - sounds like another great way to get the drive off. As for the cable breaking Im at a loss.

Everything worked great and smooth when I picked the boat up. After our 3rd outing had a little problem with stalling when going into reverse. Then we had no reverse. I started moving the shift cable going to the drive and I heard it trying to go into gear. After some wiggling it went into reverse, backed up then I was having problems getting into forward drive. Finally got it into gear and head for the dock.

Once home I disconnected the cable at the engine thinking it is possibly out of adjustment. With a helper turn the prop I pulled the cable and engaged the drive. When I pushed the cable in it was not smooth and I had to applied some force to get the drive to engage then when I went to pull it out again I was gifted with the attached picture.

Time for beer I will attack the drive in the AM. More pictures to follow.
Thanks again for the help.

4 1/2 feet from the engine? You are talking about the control (shift/ throttle) cable (from control head to engine) right? It kind of looks like is worn through by rubbing on something. Check the plastic casing to see if you can tell if it is rubbing somewhere.

4 1/2 feet from the engine would make the broken cable the control cable, not the lower shift cable. Yes?

If so, then you don't have to remove the leg to replace it....

Chris, What I was trying to say is the break occurred 4 1/2' down the cable. Sorry

Thanks to all the help the drive came off without issue.

I found the root of my problem, bad workmanship I suspect:confused: Is the spiral wrap that goes around the shift cable there to protect the cable from doing what happen to me or was the cable routed wrong? My cable does not have any spiral wrap on it.:(

The FSM does not show how to route the cable, is it up to the tech to route it in a safe manner or is there a defined way?

Also does everything look normal with the drive off? see picture

Yeah, it looks like the cable was routed wrong, you can even see the rub marks on the engine coupler  .... Which FSM are you using, because in manual #14, on page 2A-23 it shows quite clearly the correct cable routing....
