Can I splice a VHF Cable

I have a Raymarine 53 VHF radio, I just bought a rachet mount with antenna that has a 5 ft. coaxial cable. The down side is that I can't disconnect the cable from the antenna base. I wanted to insert the cable through a hole about the same size as the cable. Since I can't take the cable apart, I either have to route the cable around the outside of the boat, which looks bad or drill hole about the same size as the cable connecter to the radio, about 3/4".

What to do?

You can cut the cable and put new ends on it after you have fed it through the hole, then re-connect it. You can get new ends at RadioShack and as long as you put them on properly, they will work fine. Take a piece of the antenna cable with you to RadioShack so you can be sure to get the proper connectors (or look on the cable for the type).

Well, you can cut the end that connects to the radio off and then reattach it.

Rather than Radio Shack, go to an electronics store that sells better quality plugs or go to a marine store and get the Shakespere brand gold plated connector.
