Can I start tiller without tiller handle?

Hi guys, I had one post here, but it was too big , so I decided to split in parts.....
Here is the deal. I have 50 hp tiller, electric start, T&T, 1989. It is a tiller model. It came with controls from other Evinrude (with red plug), so I want to reconfigure it to use them. It also came with busted tiller handle.
So here is question:
Can I even try running this motor without tiller handle? I think throttle and gear linkage is not an issue, I am concerned about electrics - never had a tiller before. ????

And here is a dumb question : what is this switch for?

I guess nobody has tillers in this size.

Thanks TashasDaddy. I understand about neutral. I guess I am more concerned on what electrical components were in the tiller handle?
Starter button?
Ignition Switch?

There might be a kill switch in the tiller. You can always unhook the wiring and wrap the bare wiring connectors. If you have controls with that motor, just wire in the kill switch to the wiring harness on the control box. That control box should also have the wiring for the starter and choke, as well.

You might need to unhook the throttle linkage from the tiller handle, so it is easier to throttle with the control box lever.

You will need to sort out the starter wiring, the choke wiring, the warning alarm wiring, the motor ignition on and stop wiring. the Tach wiring and the Tilt/Trim wiring. With all that sussed you can either hard wire the control wiring by cutting the red plug off or find a harness with Red plug female with male pins on Ebay and splice that into the motor wiring. I would prefer the latter then you can remove the motor without messing with wiring.
The trim wiring is a separate three wire from the Remote trim switch to the motor.

Did I forget anything guys?

Thanks James,
I have a parts motor that is 40 hp with red plug female on it. So I can get it spliced in.

I thought that tillers had less controls on them, but now thinking about it, you still need all the stuff that you mentioned.

As I said, I have Clymers manual on backorder, but hands are itching..... so does anyone know where to get the wiring diagram for this motor?
