Yeah its the same as a Ranger. Thats also a truck a redneck would not drive.
Rednecks like full size 4x4 diesel trucks (as in 1/2 ton or bigger).

Pardon me for asking what may seem to be a dumb question to the experts of towing and the challenges it encompasses.

How would one re-distribute the weight in such a situation as the one portrayed in this thread ?

Would one have to mechanically alter the trailer from it's present dimensions ?

Honestly, there wasn't much validity to that comment in this case. If you were to do it in other cases you could load the trailer differently (move the boat further to the back to get some weight off of the trailer tongue, but that would be very dangerous because if you put much weight behind the axle of the trailer it will lift the rear of the truck and handle like CRAP! The best thing to do (which still wouldn't fix the problem in this case) is to get a load distributing hitch. This hitch mounts to a larger portion of the truck frame and will help to spread the load out more (including getting more of the weight in front of the truck axle, which is where you want it.)

That would have been a call into the police for me. Towing like an idiot at slow speeds off a highway is one thing... clocking 60mph around my family and yours - someone needs to pull that dipsh1t over and put a stop to it before someone gets hurt.

On my trailer, when you set it up from the factory you can move the axle forward or backwards. This is how you adjust the tongue weight. My tow vehicle is rated for a max tongue weight of 500lbs. My actual tongue weight is more like 80-100 lbs.

That's fine, as long as your load isn't too heavy. W/ this boat, he would never be able to lighten the load enough w/o putting WAY too much weight behind the axle. The first big dip in the road and it is going to lift all the weight off of the back of the truck.
I've seen the back tires of trucks come completely off the ground like this.

More important than pulling something heavy is having the ability to stop it.

the tounge weight is supposed to be 10-15% of the total trailer weight. so if your boat/trailer combined weigh more than 800-1000lbs you are just as unsafe as someone who is overloaded.

That is really good to know. I an guessing at the 80-100 lb tongue weight based on the fact that I regularly pick up the tongue by hand to prop up the front of the boat. The boat and trailer are less than 2000 lbs, maybe 1800. I hope that this is not as dangerous as the original situation in this post!!

Decrease the tongue weight? Easy, put lead blocks in the back of the boat, of course.

pa passed a law that requires the tow vehicle be registered sufficient for the combined weight of both tow and trailer, enforceable at a weight station if necessary. this affects transients passing through too.

more revenue, major safety issue, and theres one hill on the west end of 80 going west , your breaks will fail westbound , or your engine/trans will overheat on the east bound it so long and steep on the eastbound.

Re: Can I Tow A Trophy With A Mazda?

Here's a slight follow up question - tonight was the first time out with the new boat and trailer. Landed the boat without issue but dunked the trailer good with the surge brakes. First few stops after we pulled away from the landing the brakes pulsed and stopped weird. Seemed like they were just wet. After they dried out it stopping was normal.

Any thoughts?
