Re: Can I tow with my bimini top up?

Swiss statisticians said they've developed a formula to increase a couple?s chances of attaining a happy marriage

They said the ideal wife she should be five years younger than her husband and come from the same cultural background. Researchers also said the wife should be exactly 27 percent smarter than her husband.

Sorry, just couldn't resist.:D

I think the fact he has a lazypp is alot more detrimental to his marriage than leaving the bimini up! :D

Have you ever seen anyone else towing their boat down the road with the bimini up???
Give your wife my regards!

Seen a guy pulled over on the side of the road last week try to fix there bimini after it was tore to shreds.. The frame was all bent out of shape.. I might leave mine up, but its all folded away and has the zip cover on it.. I wouldnt take the chance.. Those tops are 400-500$$ to replace...

Lazy PP has returned!
As in almost every aspect of my life, my superior brilliance is again overlooked by the majority of mankind! :D And yes, my wife is younger than me! (Have you been reading my mail?)
So now this new boat owner is heading out today with a new four bladed prop, freshly installed smart tabs, and a bimini top properly folded and secured for travel.
The only thing flailing in the wind will be lazy pp himself.
Thanks for all the advice guys! Do you know of any other forums on the net, since I'm too damned embarrassed to ever ask another question here again? :D

Re: Can I tow with my bimini top up?

This is the first time I have seen a thread where the admiral won the battle 100%. but then i like the point where they say she is supposed to be 27% smarter, so i guess this guy found the right one.
I even fold back my runabout bimini when i plan to run hard, over about 40mph. the last time i ran it hard, boat did about 68mph the top turned into a parachute and tried to keep the boat airborne. thank God none of us got hurt. but the top needed new straps and some hardware, after being fished out of the water and straightened back out. I would not have liked to see the reaction of the driver behind if that happened on the highway. the top just went up in one shot like a kite.

back to the swiss though, if the wife is to be 10years younger, is she supposed to be 54% smarter, LOL LOL

No Fuss :)

My boat is sold with a "Towable Top". If you ever saw the difference between the bimini and a top designed to tow, you would not tow with a bimini top up. The towable top is 2 to 3 times heavier in frame work and fabric.

Regardless of what it would do to the top,the boat, or the frame. Think of it this way, it's like a huge parachute being pulled behind. The amount of extra gas burned would be enough to want to fold and tie the thing up. I won't even put mine up on windy days on the water, it's just too hard to navigate or hold position with all that up there to catch the wind.

Also, take a look at the hardware that hold the top on the boat, usually four small screws, often just self tapped into the gunwales, and two straps to small clips at each end. If you lucky, the brackets and clips are all metal.

Fold it down, wrap it up, and secure to in the down position. I've seen guys just flop the top back, and on the highway it's catching wind like parachute or worse yet, opens up and gets shredded.

Re: Can I tow with my bimini top up?

I spotted this post and could not wait to read the answers and post my reply - We had our Monterey 194fs bimini booted, but we did not lay the frame on the gunwale and we STILL had the boot ripped off and the bimini fabric ripped ALONGSIDE the seam line, AND the aluminum main bow snapped - just because we had not taken the time to lay that sucker down for the ride home (not at 55 mph !). So I spent two days this week researching, cost comparing, ordering, and finally canceling a new boot, a new bimini top and a new 3 bow frame. I actually went so far as to try to stitch the tear on my home sewing machine until that broke too. For the two minutes it would have taken to knock down the support bows to preserve the bimini and the boot I spent how much money?? and how much time??? NEVER AGAIN. YOUR WIFE IS A GENIUS !

By the way, did everybody BUT me know that any generic bimini boot might not fit our Taylor-made frame or the one you have? I learn something new every freakin' day about this beast.

PS My husband used a piece of steel conduit fractionally smaller than the ID of our bow to repair and epoxy the frame back together. Its been a tough week.

So we are curious. Exactly how did this happen?

I'd be concerned about the height of it with the top up. My 22 foot Sea Ray would be 10-12 feet tall on the trailer with the top up.
