Can I use water muff on my 1986 30hp 2 stroke mariner?

The reason I ask is because I see some other holes that that the muffs don't cover. I am not aware of what these other holes are for. Also without muffs on and in a water barrel it takes over 5 seconds for it to start peeing water, I am pretty sure this is a clear sign that the impeller is worn out. Once it finally does start peeing water it does seem like a healthy water flow.

It's actually better for it in the barrel, but you can use muffs if you want to. Some outboards, however, won't even show water through the tell-tale on muffs. You can post a pic of those extra "holes" for confirmation, but odds are you're looking at drain holes. Again, the pic will answer definitively.

I've got a 1982 30 HP Mariner (which is probably similar to your's) and have no problems running on the muffs (well, no problems now, since I figured out a couple of things I was doing wrong).

First, I have to make sure the muffs are on tight - I've used a bungee cord or a couple of spring clamps to make sure.

Second, I have to open the hose valve way up to get a decent flow.

When I take the above two steps the water begins flowing out the tell-tale almost immediately after start-up.
