My starter on my 1990 60 hp mariner 3 cyl outboard is on it's way out sometime it works and sometime i just get a click and nothing happens. have to give it a tap to get it to go so i'm pretty sure it's just my starter and not the selanoid.
Can anyone tell me if i can get a rebuild kit for this starter or do i have to get a new one and all so i need a carb rebuild kit for this same motor does anyone no what carb kit i need to get i cant see any numbers on the carbs yes there is 2 of them. I dont really want to take the carbs off untill i have a rebuild kit any help would be great thanks

You can have the starter repaired at an electric motor shop. It is not really worth doing it yourself unless you have the proper winding wire.

you will need the serial no. off the motor bracket or the freeze plug at the top of the motor starboard side. Then go to Mercury Express and type in the serial no and some more info and you will get a blowup of the carb and part no.s and prices. I think they only offer individual parts.

clik mariner outboard parts at the top of this page. you should find what you need. a local starter/alternator shop can repair the stater, much cheaper than new, less hassle than doing it youself, they have the equip to test before tear down.

Maybe the bendix is sticking. A shot of WD 40 on the shaft may help.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one. also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store.
