Can JB Weld be used in this area?

Removing a 1993 115 Powerhead, I had to re-lower the PH momentarily due to my hoist...It slowly came down onto the end of the shift rod and knocked a small piece out of the front of the crank case...See the hole in the picture.

Can I plug this hole? Obviously it not in the higher pressure back-end half but the crank is just behind this hole. Or I have plenty of front cases, is it ok to use a spare front case if they are not a matched pair?

Oh,, to add: This block will be coming apart for a ring and piston job too.

I would not J.B Weld there. Maybe see if it can be welded

And no, you can't use the front off another crank case - they're machined as a set.

You could try the good old Gray Marine Tex or have it welded.

All good ideas...I may bring it down to the local welder,,,if they can plug it without warping it, might give it a try. Be awhile until I get to this one. was Curious if Marine Tex or JB would adhere properly? Its not in a heat or pressure area, would just have to stick properly

I have plugged a bigger hole on a dirt bike. That was in a pinch while on vacation. Cleaned the area, all oil has to be gone. I used carb cleaner and sand paper. I put the cap to a toothpaste tube in the hole and JR Welded it in. The next morning I hit it with sandpaper and spread more on. Didn't ride that day but did the next 5. Took it easy the 1st day. Then I beat the daylights out of it. Rode it for 10 years and gave it to a kid . Even with that though, I'd take it in and get it welded. I could walk home if my fix ever failed.

I wouldn't recommend any type of epoxy, no matter how 'good' people say it is. If it falls out, it may leave you stranded many miles from a safe place. Either have it welded or replace the crankcase

I recommend "weld" and not JB Weld.

30 seconds with a tig torch and some filler rod

Mixed feelings on this one. The best option is to have it welded. However, if you can't, for whatever reason, I would taper sand the inside and outside so that when you do use a product like JB Weld, it would be physically fixed in such a fashion that it can't come off either way. But the is just my uneducated idea and thinking. :noidea:

I will pull it apart pretty soon and update the thread after taking it into a loval welding shop.
