Thinking of getting a 9.9 hp outboard to transport around in my car trunk. Is it okay to lay a motor horizontal without having oil/gas leak out? Does it matter 2-stroke or 4-stroke? At what point does a 4-stroke leak oil from crankcase if you keep tilting motor over?

From my experience, small portable 4-stroke engines will have a "safe' horizontal position. Check the owners manual BEFORE you buy it.

For a two stroke lay it on the side with the tiller arm because laying it on the gearshift could brake the shift leaver. I don’t know about a four stroke but I figure the same applies.

As a rowing coach, my teams has hauled our coaching motors all over the country in that back of a pickup. We've never had any problems with the two-strokes no matter how they were situated (Johnson and Mercury 15-25hp) and as long as the 4-strokes were laid on the side indicated by the little sticker there were no ill effects(Honda and Mercury 30hp)

Another rower on the boards!! Welcome

Now we can gripe about boaters that don't understand a no wake zone :)

Never had a problem with a two stroke on its side. Don't know about 4strokes.
