Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

Ok thanks I beleve there is a trans cooler on it.

Likely does but I would suggest an additional tranny cooler. Did that with our Trailblazer as soon as we got it, changed the fluid and filter as well. Tow 5,000 to 5,200 with our travel trailer as well as the boat that weighs in at around 4,000lb (ish) No issues to date and the tranny fluid is as clean and clear as the day we changed it. Keep out of overdrive and hopefully you have trailer brakes.

Unless you have had that 700R4 rebuilt or modifed you will be stressing it to the point of failure.
The rear planetary and the 3-4 clutch are the first things that grenade.

Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

That is a pretty big load for a 1/2T truck. I tow a 24' boat that doesn't weigh as much as that nearly 27' one that the OP plans on towing. I feel I am at or near the trucks limit but I am towing much farther than he is.

That boat holds 140 gallons of fuel and 22 gallons of water. That alone is over 1000#.

Not being critical but, fuel is 8 lbs/gal.
Funniest statement of the day! :)

I`d suggest adding lift bags to the rear axle. Make sure the trailer brakes are in good shape. Your going to have your hands full.

Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

I have a 97 with 6 1/2 ft. bed. I believe 6100 lbs. is the limit but, I could be wrong.
I towed a 6600 lb. camper 200 miles with no problems but, it let me know it was back there.
Anyway, I decided to chime in because I lost reverse gear at 156,000 miles. It cost me $2000 to get the transmission rebuilt.
The shop told me that I actually did good because they usually go around 100,000.
I put a strain on my tranny on several occasions. I had 15 sq. of shingles in the bed at one time. It made the trip but, won't do it again.

I have owned this truck for ten years and the only major problem I have had with it was the transmission.

Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

Been using my chevy 1500 5.7 for 8 yrs now and I tow my 5000lb boat in OD. Haven't had any issues at all, except all the gas I've saved from not running in 3rd. I do drop it down to 3rd in city and backroads but most times it stays in OD 4th. I have the G80 rear if that matters.
5000lbs with the 1500 and you'll know its back there but ya shouldn't have any issues. Hope your trailer has brakes.

You probably use more gas towing in od than in 3rd. It makes the engine work a lot harder as well as the trans. Also makes your trans run hotter. G80 doesn't matter- what matters is what gears you have in the rear.

No way, higher rpms consume more gas.

Water weighs 8lbs/gallon not fuel

Gasoline weighs 6.25lbs/gallon
Diesel weighs 7.1lbs/gallon

I truck for a living and we always just figure 8 lbs. My bad that gas weighs a little less than fuel. As for beer...all I know is once my cooler is loaded up it prob weighs more than my 65 gals of gas onboard! :-D

My 5.7 hemi Durango eats gas in OD pulling my boat - Well it eats gas in regular drive (Tow mode) too but its much happier in tow mode, no hunting gears and running in it's power band. Shift points are extended for better acceleration and mileage is about the same.

There's a lot more to it than just what RPM you're running. If you're in overdrive you may have to give it 40% throttle to maintain speed; drop down to 3rd and now you're giving it say 25%. The harder you hit the gas the more fuel the PCM will dump regardless of RPM. Try towing with OD off and check your MPG's. Reset your trip meter when you fill up and calculate it out. It will probably be very similar or slightly better with OD off. There's also the added benefit of your transmission lasting longer.

Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

I would say it will be way over 7400 pounds but I would pull it all day long with that truck. I have a 85 mirada 255 that I weighed a couple weeks ago it was 8,000 pounds so I would say you are longer so it will be more than that. I would still pull it with that truck as long as everything works right.

Re: Can my 98 chevy 1500 pull this boat

My feeling is that 1/2 ton pick ups should generally tow up to 5000 lbs of towed weight.

My Ram 1500, with towing package(including trans cooler, 3.92 axle) has the receiver marked 5000 lb capacity; even though the manual says 7300 lbs.

The dry weight of an I/O boat normally includes the "standard" engine package.

Same question on another forum: Answer was according to axle ratio: 3:08=5K, 3:42=6K, 3:73=7K.
