alright all.
been given a 150 brake horsepower V8 engine which i will put on the shelf for the day when my V4 packs u (its old and i reckon the water jacket will fail as salt water was left inside).

The V8 has an alloy block and head which is great for weight, (its lighter than the V6 which was cast iron!)... only thing is, i don't think my OMC stern drive can handle the acceleration / power/.

what out drive would be good for this type of motor? or is it simply of sourcing a drive that is matched or slightly higher in HP than the engine?

my drive is the one listed in the schematic on my site as follows:

What are you planning on using for a bell housing, coupler and exhaust?
Salt water with an alloy engine...

Badman,... I've been following your exploits,... I Love the work you did on the Manifold issue...
I'd be Surprized if that old 400 Stringer will run at All, muchless for Long...
It originally came with an Inline 4 cylinder....
It was an anemic little troublesome unit when New, 40 years ago...

I don't know what the most Common drives are on your side of the Great Pond,...
Mercruiser,..?? Volvo,..?? I've heard of BMW units over your way...
Whatever is the Most Common drivelines in the UK is what you should be Looking for, with whatever HorsePower you want to put into that little hull you've got....
Buy a Donor Boat with the Driveline you want,+ Junk it out for the parts,....
That's the way I refit Old Appreciated hulls to much Newer, more Common drivelines.......
That way Parts can be bought for them in the future........ ;)

yep. i would tend to agree with that.
buy another tub with the drive i want.
i don't think this 17ft owens is in good enough condition to handle a power upgrade anyway.
And really, we want a fishing boat... not a speed boat.
Over here its mercruiser and volvo penta drives.

nice one

Salt water with an alloy engine...

i would probably do it in a simiar way to how its done now... a car engine (ford capri) with a custom mounting plate up against a custom water cooled manifold which has exhaust and water both going through the intermediate housing and through the drive into the water.

salt water will be fine with the alloy engine. it is already water cooled. the extra corrosion from the salt water will reduce its lifetime and will need flushing etc.
