That is the electric choke solenoid. Chokes the motor for cold start when you push the button on the dash. The cracked rubber is no big deal unless you run around without the hood. Where are your wires anyway?

The worst thing that could happen is the electric choke fail to operate when you push the button.
EDIT: Well, I suppose the worst thing, in addition to that, is it might blow the fuse. Can't say I've ever seen it happen, just CMA.

Lets go back to the orignal question. If it is running poorly and one spark plug is unscrewed you need to check all plugs and do a spark gap test. Make sure the plugs are the correct type for your engine. Look at the plugs for oil fouling or any thing else which would be unusal. Inspect the coils for burning, cracks or melt down. Report back on your finding and we will get this problem going.

also make sure the plug wires are on the proper plugs. The covers on the heads have numbers on them but don't go by them as they are interchangeable. I don't have my manual in front of me, but I think the starboard side is 1-3 and the port is 2-4 from the top of the motor. The firing order is 1-2-3-4

So as soon as i get to it i will definatly check all the plugs and all.

well i checked all plugs and #2 wasnt sparking, replaced it with the correct plug and took it to the lake. running exactly the same, like i said before i dont have a rpm tac so im just assuming i was running around 1500 to 2000 rpms..... ran alot smoother than last time... now the reason i think it wasnt any different than last time is cause the cylinder that had the loose plug isnt moving at all..... now as weird as this is the #4 plug was the one that was originaly loose.... and leaking... i tightened and its now leaking again.....
now what happened is i got out past the no wake zone and hit it... realized it was the same... and since id spent all morning getting ready for a day fishing on the lake i wasnt going to let that ruin my trip so i went to a nice cove i know...... anchored for about 2 hours and fished... (good fishin by the way)....
started to get dark so i went to leave.... and i couldnt get it started... tried for 20 mins..... finaly i flagged someone down and got a tow in..... finally after 45 mins i got to the marina and dropped my motor as the wife went to back the trailer down and tried to fire her up again.... she started right up... so i went to go putt in circles and it ran better than she had ran before for me.... since ive had the issues.....

anyways sorry for the long post... jut want to try and give all the details.... still havnt gotten a model number but im almost possitive its a 1965 johnson 60hp super seahorse... electric start... superquiet and whatnot.... any other advice would be awesome.... im almost about ready to just drop it off at the mechanic... thing is ive heard bad things about the few outboard mechanics we have around here...... and im having a baby so i dont quite have the funds i once used to..... thank you everyoneee!

If Im reading correct, your #4 has disconnected from the crankshaft ,the result is it hit the sparkplug ,stripping the threads, which is why it comes loose. You need to pull the cyl head on that side and report back what you see.I believe you blew the eng.

It sounds to me that your #4 spark plug hole threads may be slightly stripped allowing the spark plug to come loose when running. You might have to install a heli-coil to repair the threads. It's going to run poorly on 3 out of 4. I can't imagine you going anywhere on only one cylinder. Have a look at the threads and compare to the other cylinders. Turn it over slowly by hand. Do you hear hissing at the spark plug?
Rest assured the fuel ratio is 50:1 since Johnson started making the 60hp in 1964, the year the fuel ratio changed from 24:1. That's hardly your problem though. You need to put down the fishin' pole and close the cooler and do some troubleshooting. Follow the threads that Tashasdaddy gave you and document and report your findings so we can help. You'll appreciate fishin' with a reliable Johnson to take you home.

definatly. i dont plan on anymore fishing until i have a reliable johnson. unfortunatly i work like a freaking dog and get one day a week to catch up on anything that needs attention. and also unfortunatly my life has alot of things more important than my johnson... ;/ either way, im out of this apartment in a week and on to a new house with a huge garage... so my johnson will be getting alot more attention. that is why i lack info... i cant exactly go out and look when i think of something or you guys mention something. ;/ i will deffinatly be checking in on all of this this week though, will be getting back asap.
ps: i really dont think i blew my motor.
pss: i basicly was going nowhere thats why i believe im running one cylinder...
and correct me if im wrong, but its only a two cylinder motor right? a two stroke... 2 plugs per cylinder? is this a stupid question? this is the first boat motor ive ever even touched..... i come from a two stroke yz250 to this?

anyways thank you for all of your help!

Those motors are four cylinders with a points/magneto ignition or points/battery ignition. It should have a distributor with two sets of points, a single coil and a single condenser.

You should start with a compression check. All cylinders should be 90PSI or greater and pretty even. If so, you can repair the rest of the issues, cheaply and easily. When my Johnson V4 plug stripped out, I was able to remove the compression washer on the spark plug and screw it in. It worked for years.

there is no way a 4 cylinder will run on 1 cylinder .not happening!!although its possible on a 2 banger.rule of thumb---1 plug per cylinder.these are not atv's with an extra quick switch plug built in.
