Can someone please tell me what year this motor is and any information about it?

Johnson 115HP J4978864.<br />I think they said it was a "Sea horse" model??? Any information would be helpful. I was told it was filled with red mystery oil and stored for three years. It was on a boat that was wrecked and the front part of the boat was under water and the rear up in the air and the motor was saved???? Why would someone put mystery oil in it?<br />Thanks

Sandman We need a model number to determine te year built.<br />As for the oil I would say that was a way to keep it from rusting up on the inside.

Is this (J4978864) not the model number? Is this the serial number maybe?

That's the serial number. The model number should be on the same tag on the transom clamp or swivel bracket. You're looking for something akin to J115EL77 or 115TLCO.<br /><br />The Marvel Mystery Oil was put in there to keep things oiled up and prevent rusting. Not my first choice. But if it's on the shelf, what the heck...<br /><br />Consider rebuilding the carbs and definately rebuild the water pump. Hopefully if they put oil in the motor, they drained the carbs too. But don't rely on it. Fresh gearlube would be a good idea too.

Hi everyone, I have inherited a smal johnson sea horse,dont know annything about it seems in good shape. The C #is C33775 model# is 4W70E could someone fill me in on the year and HP. Introduces, does not work on this motor for year and HP. J,C, Thanks

Well, in my opinion anyway. <br /><br />Johnson 4W70 <br />Year: 1970<br />HP: 4<br />WOT RPMS: 4500 (4000-5000RPM range)<br />Displacement: 5.28 cu.in. = 86.5 ccm<br />Cylinders: 2<br />Weight: 35 lbs. = 15.9 Kg<br />Spark plugs: Champion J6C gapped at .030"<br />Oil mix: Officially, 50:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil. Due to the lack of roller bearings on the con-rods and lack of proper oil seal on the bottom main bearing, I go a little heavier. See the Oil Mix FAQ in the FAQ forum for details.<br />Lower unit oil: OMC/BRP 'HiVis' or equ. Sanman.... There's a couple more letters that would be in back of the "TL" in the model number of 115ETL. We need those two letters in order to determine the year.
