Can someone say "Plug!"?

Yup...just like everyone else, I've done the plug thing.

Last Friday I purchased a 1997 Maxum, 17' with a 135hp mercruiser sterndrive. My roommate and I took it out on Saturday and had a great time. Water was a bit choppy in Southern Indiana, but it was still nice. My roommate is an experienced boater, I am not. I had been around them as a young boy into my early teens, but never actually had to deal with the plugs, bilge pump, etc.

We decided to go out again in Sunday, this time taking my sister and her two kids with us. It was my first time getting the boat off of the trailer, so I went through a few of the motions I had done the day before. My roommate took off the transom straps, so I figured he was handling the back of the boat, I was getting things ready inside. He backed me down, and I putted around to the dock.

Everyone climbed on board and we putted out past the no wake zone and I geared it up...but the engine died. I tried this about 3 times, and then tried taking it really slow...as the boat finally started picking up speed the bow lifted out of the water, and my neice says "Where is all this water coming from?"

I looked back and the water us coming out of the storage box between the seats! I turned to the roommate and said "did you put the plug in?"

We headed back for shore and beached it, he jumped out as I cut the engine. With the plug in, we waited for the bilge to pump out the water. I remembered that the previous owners had left a pail in the storage with the paddle and bumpers, so I got that out and started pailing water out. I looked over to the ramp about 300 yds away to see if anyone was laughing.

While I was pailing out the water my neice got a phone call on her cell. It was my mom, and the first thing she said was "We almost sank!" I had to reassure my mom that we were okay and would be fine the rest of the day. Dad got a kick out of it as he had done the same thing many times. Anyway, after a while it was time to try again, and this time the boat planed out the way it should.

Water was much calmer on Sunday and we had a great time out on the lake. When we trailered the boat that afternoon my roommate said he was going to make a sticker to put on the straps that says "Don't forget the plug". :)

What I've started doing is pulling the plug at the ramp, then re-installing it when I get home. There never seems to be any water left by the time I trailer the boat back to my house.

Still, I check it every time I hook up the trailer, and every time I prep the boat for launching at the ramp. So far, so good.

My 5 step plug routine....

1. Installed after pulling boat from under canopy to driveway.

2. Checked when tightening down transom straps.

3. Checked (by daughter) while I check trailer safety chains, lights, and locks.

4. Checked by daughter at ramp before launch.

5. Re-checked at ramp by me when daughter is not looking.

Some say I am anal...but so far (knock on wood) I haven't forgotten the plug...but I am sure someday...it will happen.

-JustMrWill

I pull the plug once I get home, let it drain, then put it back in. I never take it out unless I have time to wait for it to finish draining. So far so good.

Wife asks me repeatedly "Is the Plug In?" Music to my ears. Did the transom straps forget once too. My face was more magenta than my boat.

I am seriously thinking about using a marker on my Trim arm covers. Just the word PLUG in big letters. Or maybe I'll get vinyl letters to put on there that say it. It was an interesting morning of pailing! :)

I used to obsess over 'the plug' so much, the last 2 boats I built don't even have one. No drain hole at all..

Just 2 big auto (with over ride) bilge pumps. What little bit of water they don't get, I suck out with a shop-vac when I get home.

It's just like the pilot that lands with the gear up. There are the ones who have, and the ones that are going to.

That's where I WAS!! Patoka Lake, Lick Fork SRA ramp. It was embarrassing. And to boot, my roommate left his Cell in his pocket. He pulled it out dripping wet. The screen didn't come on when he opened it to shut it off. We boated for a couple hours and when he turned it back on in the truck it worked...WHEW!

After reading this forum, I will be taking a lot of zip lock baggies for phones, keys and wallet! ;)

Re: Can someone say "Plug!"?

So, remember my plug story? Well...today the starter wouldn't turn. Thought it was the battery because we had worked on the fuel sensor and had the key on a few times to check it, thought maybe I drained it or something. But, come to find out the water that came into the boat submerged the starter causing the brushes to corrode and "seize". A guy at the marina tapped it a bit and it started right up...told me I need to replace the starter.

So, plug did cost me something! :) BTW...put the plug in before we left the house! ;)

Re: Can someone say "Plug!"?

Backed into boat ramp one very hot day at crowed ramp,.. No one was cooperating with each other. As I'm doing my thing to launch, there is a couple beside me with the wife or G.F. laughing her cute *** off. Husband or B.F. looking at me like I'm the biggest a-hole on the planet. I'm puzzled as to why. Then the guys wife points to my winch stand and says to the husband "why didn't you do something like that" I now realize that hubbies boat was full and he was attempting to get it back on trailer. I have written on both sides of my winch stand in big bold letters "PUT IN PLUG"

My motor toter attaches to the frame and I have to pull a pin out to release it. It is directly under the plug hole. I have written on the toter in BIG letters "PLUG". I have to admit that before I did this I once left it out on a very cool Oct. Morning.

Re: Can someone say "Plug!"?

An ex-work acquaintance borrowed a new ZXi1100 Jet Ski and took it to a local lake with a young European backpacker girl he was trying to impress. Roars around lake on Ski, teaches girl to drive it (like it's SO difficult) then ties it up to a jetty while he and Eurochick have a picnic on the beach.
After eating and whatever for an hour or so this fine young couple are getting a little hot so decide to go for another Ski. Go out to end of jetty to find a straight piece of line sticking out of the water vertically and no sign of Ski. Yep - he'd left the plugs out. Didn't have the heart to ask him about his success or otherwise with the girl! The company who owned the Ski no longer have this maestro of manhood on their payroll.

Re: Can someone say "Plug!"?

Always sweated the plug, once was saved by bystander, never actually launched without.

Pontoons can't get "trailer sunk" or take on water. Ergo, no compelling plug action required -- sweet! But I've noticed that you can leave the trailer straps attached, floats low in water...

Once saw "self bailing" featured on GSA inflatable of some sort with funny tube-worm style thingys on the back. Anybody aware of such?

Re: Can someone say "Plug!"?

I backed my boat in the water with my buddy who had never been in a boat before.I told him how to work everything and he said he could handle it.As the boat left the trailer he waved to me.I THOUGHT that he was waving to say that everything was cool. After I parked the truck I found out that he was trying to figure out where the drain plug that I forgot was at.Turns out the wave wasnt as friendly as once thought
