Can Starter be replaced w/o Pulling Engine?

Take a look at this installation if you have a moment...

Apparently the starter needs R&R.....in looking down in there...it looks essentially impossible to reach the starter without pulling the engine. Is this correct?

I've never worked on V8 I/O's.....they sure look to be a nightmare.

Here's the link to pictures and description of a boat I'm thinking of bidding on.

If you are unable to get you arm down under the starter, remove the starboard manifold and you will have plenty of room.

I would be very concerned about that engine, especially since you don't get to look at it.
That plastic cover is on backwards (Doesn't he know how it goes???) the flame arrestor is off.
The top of the Stbd. riser looks like bubble paint (Overheat) starter inop (does engine turn over with a wrench on the front pulley? Have the manifolds and risers died and the then is actually locked up from water?
The trim tilt pump is inop?
Basically, the boat looks fair, power system is ?????????

And what about the drive?
It's an 80's boat, don't overspend and prepare for a complete new engine, manifolds, risers, trim pump, and who knows what else if you buy it site unseen.

Thanks for the reply Don.

Actually...I have seen the boat. It's just a short drive from my house.

The one thing that looked promising to me was that the engine looks new(er)....than the boat.

Would you agree?

I know it's hard to tell from those crummy pictures...but when I was there looking at it...it looked like a recent installation.

Of course; that doesn;t mean much if it's seized.

There are no sea trials permitted at Cars4Causes.I suppose I should pass...but it's got me tempted.

If you can't sea trial, you can still check as Don suggested (pull the plugs, turn by hand, check hydraulics, etc.)

edit: I just looked at it. It still has it's registration. Why not track down the PO and ask them what's up?

I can't say much about buying an Ebay boat,I just bought one. But at least see if they will let you check the engine out some more.Do as Don suggested. At least pull the plugs and see if it will turn over by hand..
Good Luck!

I would guess that PO did not know much about boats and they probably rarely or never ran this boat. Plan on spending lots of $ on this boat and trailer. If you are not a marine mechanic I would say save your $ and buy a boat in better condition. This one definately needs more than a starter to say the least. Even if you get it started there are lots of things that can and will break on a sterndrive if they are not properly maintained.
