Can the stator, switchbox, regulator and trigger all fail simultaneously?

I have a Suncruiser pontoon with a 1995 Mercury 60 hp motor. A mechanic told us that the stator, switchbox, regulator and trigger were all bad and needed to be replaced. It seems unlikely to me that this is possible short of a lightening strike. Please weigh in with opinions. If you have encountered this particular problem before, your information would be very helpful.

I would say find another shop that knows how to test these components.
