Can these wires be replaced with 10 ga.??????????

i was wondering if i could replace these wires with 10 ga. wire? i was planning on letting enough wire hang out of the inner harness so i could still go on the color coded charts. please let me know what you think of my idea on fixing this without having to fork up 150.00 for a new harness. thanks and any other ideas is welcome. ohhh yeah and one more thing the wire that screws up into the distributor got pulled out and now i dont have the metal screw piece that i need to put it back. if anyone can tell me where i might find one or where i could look that would be splended!!! thanks again TOOCAN sorry, your looking at a 1978 merc. inline 140hp

I cannot see what size wires they are.

Using bigger wires will never cause a problem, using smaller wires will.

If the wires in the picture are 10g or smaller, you are good to go.

Looks like you are planning to rewire the internal wire harness?

You can always go heavier than the original wire gauge. The drawback is that the heavier wire is not as flexible and harder to work with.

I redid my harness last spring with good results. Like you I couldn't see spending the money on a new harness. I used waterproof heat shrink crimp terminals to splice the old to new wires. Try to maintain the original wire colors to make reconnection easier and to help in future troubleshooting.

thanks guys that helps me know this is not another one of my tight a** moves. i will check the wire ga. but they seem really flexible to be 10ga. or more. i will let 4"-6" of original wire on the harness so i can relate back to the color codes. i only said 10ga. because i bought 100 ft. of it for other like this projects.ill keep you guys posted TOOCAN
