Mercury 125 on 171 Champion I know that everyone says that to get full rpm you can change the pitch of the prop. I agree but I have a 4 blade quicksilver 25 pitch prop and have a great hole shot with a top end about 55 mph roughly about 4700 rpm not bad but can you adjust the governor to let it run higher rpm's (or another way?) with the same prop The manual says this motor should max rpm at approx. 5500 to 5700

Thanks Steve

You can only change the pitch up or down 2, down would increase your rpm by about 300 or so. If you motor hits its power peak 5100 or so that would increase your top end.

there is no govenor on your motor, however, raiseing you motor on the transom should increase top end and therefore rpm. Have fun!

Well I just tried something. I thought it was a governor but maybe not there is a long bar (about 14") atached to the linkage and had a mark on it so the mechanic would know that it has been tampered with adjusted it and low and behold 500 more rpm I thought there was a way without switching props I probably voided my warranty if this isnt a governor what is it?

Max rpm's on a big bore 4 cyl merc is 5250 because of the harmonic which i have seen break a crankshaft because turning to many rpm's. You need a 24 pitch Laser II for this boat. If the screw you turned has orange material on it you have changed the max timing and that is not good if you leave this like it is you can burn a piston because of to much timing and that will not be covered under warranty
