Can this be fixed ?

I lost the upper bearing on my 98 Fitch 150. After tearing the engine down, I found that the block and crankcase cover were damaged due to the outer bearing sleeve spinning inside the motor. The damage isn't severe and I smoothed out the areas with emery cloth, but I think after the re-build, this area is causing me problems and will eventually fail again. Any suggestions on how to make repairs to these area's would be appreciated.

Gerald

I'm not out in the shop to look at the service manual, but is'nt that upper bearing held in a seperate bearing head, or carrier? Did that siezed bearing spin the entire carrier, or what am I thinking about here?

Yes it did. The split sleeve looks like it spun in the carrier. The damage was moderate to the block and crank cover....

If your talking about a split sleeve bearing, That would be the center main bearing. Without seeing it, it would be hard to tell. If the damage is bad enough, it would pump pos. & neg. pressure between cylinders #2, and #3. If the scoring is not to bad, you may get by with a sealant, such as some of the Loc-Tite products, or maybe gel-seal. Maybe some of the other guy's will have a better suggestion. Dhadley on this board I believe deals with performance engines, and may have dealt with this problem.

OK! I was way off the mark on this one. I have never had one of these Ficht engines apart, so I am not all that familiar with them. I went out to the shop, and got the manual, "which I should have done in the first place" Now I see what you are talking about. I would really like to see this engine apart before I stick my foot in my mouth again.

Do I need the diagnostic software to check timing and such due to stator and flywheel change?

Will running a double oil mix dramatically affect idle on this motor.

Does this sound like a tear-down and see whats going on situation....??
Since your other post was locked ......
1-You do need the diag. software to check the timing. It locks up the timing so you can check it then tell the ECU the actual timing.
2-Oil in the fuel won't help anything, the fuel delivery is through the injectors not through the reeds ,crankcase, ports. You use the diag. software to start a new break in cycle.
3-20psi on a engine where 95-105psi is normal is alot.Once again the diag. software would help, you can do a cylinder drop test to find out if one hole is weak. Also check codes and monitor different peramiters while the engine is running.
I would try to get the software before you go any futher and if you want to tear it down pull head first to check the cylinders.

Thanks for the advice ****, I'll park the boat until after the holidays and go ahead and purchase the software and cable. I priced everything at the local dealer here in Charlotte and they want $126 for the software, cable and book. I hope to get my rig back on the water before spring. Another question..Do you think that I should change the Crankshaft rings if I have to remove the cover???..just a thought

Gerald

There is a wear spec for the rings and if they where within spec there will be fine. Those crank rings are pretty tough. Also with the age and hours on the engine I'm sure there fine .It's still troubling about the low comp, I hope you don't have a broken ring (S)or worse.
