Unfortunately it is too hard to tell from the picture alone. You would have to remove the unit, clean/descale it and see how bad the pitting is and if there are any cracks.

The good news is that you can pick up a good used one from Ebay for under $150 shipped. You would just have to swap over your parts to it. Seal kits are around $50.00 shipped. Of course, you would have to pull the engine to replace it though.

^^^^ Agreed.

Is it working? What happens if you just clean it up?

It works, but water does enter the bilge and shifting is difficult. Before I go the the time and trouble and expense of rebuilding this drive I just wanted some opinions about whether it's worth it. For $200 it sounds like I'd do better to replace this one. Unfortunately, since my power steering control lever broke I will need to pull the IH anyway and lift the motor. So, rather than do it twice, I'll just look for one in better condition. Thanks for your input guys.

One more question...when looking at the intermediate housings on eBay, is there a difference in the end that connects to the bell housing of the engine. i.e. Ford 351 engine vs chevy 350 engine?

PB Blaster, and lots of it! :) Get all the guts out of it and take it to a local engine machine shop. They can hot-tank it for you, shouldn't be more than $20 or so. You'll get it back fresh and clean, and it'll be much easier to inspect.

Man, Im not sure to be perfectly honest. They all seem so similar. Hopefully Howard Sterndrive will chime in with the answer your looking for.
