Does anyone know if the main tilt ram shaft/head/eye can be removed from the cylinder? See attached pic for reference. I'm taking apart (very slowely and carefully--due to corrosion) brackets and TNT from my motor. I want the TNT and have another complete swivel assm already. The very last thing I havent been able to get out so far is the dowel/shaft that goes thru the eye on the RAM shaft in the swivel bracket.

As a last resort, I can cut thru it to get it seperated, and replace it if it is replaceable. I'm still soaking the pin but it is pretty stuck. I could sacrafice the Swivel and cut it if necessary-But wanted to know about that shaft first.

Manual didnt show too much on that shaft, as as far as I can tell.

No it cannot be removed from shaft as welded on from factory. To remove cross pin you can heat the bosses on swivel bracket several times with acetylene torch to expand it and break crossion loose. Do not pound on it when its hot!!!

I just removed my trim unit from the bracket. Heat the pin on both sides, remove the clips and use abig brass or smaller punch with a lump hammer to drive it out. I will eventually move but it will take a few solid striks with the punch and lump hammer. dont deform the end of the pin or it wont go through the housing.

Thanks everyone...I've moved the pins before but this looks real stuck. wasnt sure if the shaft screwed out ....I'll heat this later and work it over time..Got the entire motor apart down to the Crank, a crusty one and only broke 2 bolts/screws. Man, the machine shop really cleaned the powerhead, looks almost new!

Dont bother with anymore heat, both parts swell so its not gaining anything with the heat.
Ive had this discussion with plenty of people before, its ok if you have a part that can be kept cool and use the heat .
but with something like this you expand the pin and also tighten the hole due to expansion of the metal.
the heat will of helped with corrosion but thats its job done, now to just get the pin out bash bash bash.

Anyway once you have it moving then go round the other side and just keep hitting with BIG hammer and brass drift.
Once out clean it up and grease it when you put it back, clean and grease inside the hole as well.

There is no need for the pin to be stationary, it should realy rotate slightly in the housing, thats why there is pins incase
it should fall out.
If it was meant to be such a tight fit there would be no pins to keep it in place !!!!!!!!!!

Once you undo the trim cylinder top cap, the ram will come out.
On the other end there will be a large nut to undo, take pics so you remember exactly how it all goes back.
and do make sure you put all new seals, dont think any are good, just a tiny little bit and its bad.

at the end of each season knock the pin out a little then the other side as well, keeps it free for the future !!!

GOOD LUCK

You're only supposed to heat the alum around the pin, not the pin.

Thanks all...Good tips. I had to give up for the night, but I'm happy it moved about 1/4"...confident I'll be able to get it out. Nice, because I can now keep my brackets, TNT, Swivel...Just have to find a new Tilt Tube.

Appreciate the help as always.

back and forth, back and forth. each time it should move a little further. wd40 and pb does nothing to aluminum. vinegar sometimes helps due to mild acidic nature. screen door and window places sell an aluminum lubricant that is kind of like a waxy, bubbly version of wd40. it works better than anything else.

mushrooming the pin? I personally don't waste time trying to protect the pin. I have a 10lb mini sledge and a piece of rebar. I use an angle grinder to cut a taper into the pin. after the mangled pin comes out, I replace it with a length of Industrial standard SS rod. The rod costs less than a dollar an inch and the time wasted trying to save the old one doesn't add up. If the pin requires more than 1 hour of work then I whip out the sawzall and cut it. time is money.

AHHHH, got the pin out finally....Just patience, moderate heat and back and forth a smidge at a time. Thanks for the tips and the one about the Aluminum lube. That looked so bad I cant believe it moved.

Just tackled the Tilt tube also.. Various heating/cooling(ice) methods, and eventually it moved. Definately not easy but Patience and persistance rules the day!

Appreciate the tips.
