Can U help me determine the value of this boat?

Greetings,

I'm a newbie to iboats.com. I have experience with your basic ski/ inboard/outboard type boats, but that's it.

I encountered a 'fixer upper' large boat, that is being sold on consignment. Below I'll paste the URL to a small web site I made with pictures of the boat, and descriptions of the images.

I'd love it if people could respond either here in the forums, or via e-mail, with opinions regarding what this boat would have to be priced at to be worth fixing up...

The URL to the pictures and descriptions is:
http://users2.ev1.net/~jw15851/boat/boat.html
I'm just finishing uploading the site now, so it should be up and running in a few minutes.

Many thanks to all!

-Jason W

"fixer upper" is a nice term....

Pictures almost always look better than the actual thing in my experience, and from the pictures alone, I'd run, not walk away from that one...

-Roger

The set up does not look too bad to me, but if you are gonna to use it you would have to put to much money and work in it.
It looks more like a nightmare to me, ask your self if you wanna to become it true.

I dont think its worth at all restoring boats, you pay doble the price than for a new one.

I have had experience in restoring a few boats. and I think CCrew is right. pics look better than what you are actually seeing. This boat looks like one big mess. And a whole lot of money with the end result being less than what you hoped for!! Rule of thumb though, when restoring a boat get a good estimate on what you think it will cost you and then double it. good luck but stay away from this hole in the water !!!

I dunno, looks like it could have possibilities. For starters, it's not a jet motor. It used to have a standard-issue MerCruiser outdrive on the back, likely an Alpha. The probably knocked it off or damaged it, and came up with the current set-up, which is unique to say the least.

If the hull is solid, no rot in the stringers or transom, then the boat is certainly salvageable.

I certainly wouldn't pay much for it, and the first thing I'd do is take the outboard off and sell it - that would give you some seed money for the next stage.

If you've got the pockets for it, get a new or late model MerCruiser engine package - don't bother trying to patch the old beast back together. If you don't have the deep pockets, then you're in for repairing the motor and finding a new outdrive.

If you're looking for a modest sized cuddy cabin you could come out ahead on this one if the basic hull is in good shape. If you have to start replacing stringers, floors, etc. then you're eating into that margin. Personally I wouldn't go over $1000 for it, with the trailer. That way, if you do get stuck, you should be able to break even by parting out the trailer and motor(s).

Also, check out your local library for boat repair type books and read up. Educate yourself, particularly if you're planning on doing the work yourself....

Above all, have fun!
- Scott

Can you say money pit? They broke the I/O and put a motor (70hp) that will barely move a boat that size above a crawl!
That's the first time I have ever seen an abomination like that. Do yourself a favor, drive to work a different way so you don't have to look at it anymore.
Talk to boaters in your area to see what kind of boats and set ups are favored.
Unlike old houses, money pit boats give you no reward at the end of it all!

I actally like the style of the boat. I agree it would be a HUGE, expensive project. I haven't heard you state but can you get a title for the trailer and current regestration info on the boat, (I'd hate for you to drop money into this thing then get screwed when it came to paperwork). I'd also check and see it the old I/O even turns over (it really needs to to get any salvage $ from it).

If the hull is solid it can be salvaged, but is this really a project you want, have room for, have good neighbors that won't b!tch when you have a boat hull in the yard in various stages of resto., and most of all a patient wife that will...

In this instance, I would just assume you are getting a hull on a rusty trailer. Then part from there assuming you have to tear EVERYTHING out from the hull and rebuild and repair the trailer. In other words: Assume you have to replace flooring, interior, and above all: The engine and wiring (the latter will force you to re-do most of the interior anyways)!

At that point, you're almost building a new boat. The best thing here probably is the trailer that is salvageable at a reasonable price and possibly some deck hardware (seats, cleats, steering wheel, etc.).

Wow. I mean, wow. I have seen some interesting things in my life, and this has just reached the top of the list.

If the hull structure is sound, then it could be a doable project, and maybe worth $1000, tops as is. If the structure is shot, it is still a doable project, but not worth more than $500. If the engine is not shot, you would have to hunt up a complete outdrive, not the worst thing in the world to do. If the engine is shot, then you would be looking at rebuild/replacement. An alternative is bracket mounting twin 150 horse outboards, but then you would have to find two used matching outboards or buy new. The cheapest would end up rebuilding the current engine and finding/installing a used outdrive. You could spend at least $3000/$5000 (probably more) to get it running. Then it is just rebuilding the interior. Worst case, you could end up pumping $15,000/$20,000 for a complete structural rebuild/repower if you did all the work yourself and got some really great deals. If you don't mind the project taking a long time and you like to do that sort of thing, then go for it. Otherwise, I would say get in the car and speed-shift you way away from that thing and never look back. Don't be tempted by the "I could have a big boat cheap" syndrome. There is no such thing as a cheap boat....Good luck...

I would forget it, your are talking just way too much $$$ to get that thing up and running.. For what you are going to invest in motor and drive you could get a very nice project boat to work on.. This thing needs to be torched.

K

Re: Can U help me determine the value of this boat?

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.

One poster made a suggestion I had already considered, ditch the whole engine and drive, and fab a mounting bracket for two outboards. This would open up the whole engine compartment for an extra fuel cell, and / or storage.

I would be capable of doing such a thing, the problem is I have so little experience with this type of stuff (boats) that I don't even know what such outboard's would cost.

I would have to get someone who really knows their stuff to make an assessment to the structural integrity of the hull and frame. It could really be a fun project, but would consume money that I really don't have to drop into it now.

The problem would be that if I got in over my head, and had to sell the thing, the value of the boat would not and may not ever increase enough to recoup my investment to even break even. Such a thing scares me.

Another think I noticed while taking pictures, and forgot to mention... when I was looking at the lower 'bedroom' area, and kneeled down on the carpet, the jeans over my knee soaked up some water. So somewhere the roof (on a boat) is leaking.

I don't think the trailer is really worth anything. It's rusted pretty bad, and the hydraulic break mechanism that sits on the hitch, looks a bit rusted and sick. I've seen rusted things work perfectly before, but that is usually the exception to the rule...

It's a little disappointing, cause I bet the guy would sell it for under a thousand dollars, and when fixed up, I could really simplify the whole thing and feel it could be really really neat.

Unless the guy offers to 'give' it to me for maybe a hundred or something, I think I'll take everyone's advice and leave it to a landfill.

Thanks for all the feed back. I'm surprised at the response I got, this must be a very active forum. Best wishes to all.

-Jason W

Even if the owner gave it to you along with some $100 bills it would be too much.
It's an ex boat.
It has ceased to be.

I would say with your admitted limited skill and knowledge level with boat repair/modification, you really should skip this. You don't want to cut your teeth on something this large. A failure of this magnatude would be devastating. Of course, if you are really fearless or masocistic, you could dive in, but there are plenty of project boats out there that would give you a better result. Just walk away...
