tass,
While all the info here is great info, your boat is a 78, the orginal stuff lasted 33years. You gonna keep it 33 more?? I doubt it. I'm not knocking any of the resto-work done here at all, but a lot of it is way over-done. Like trying to re-invent the wheel. I'm on probably boat #30 in my boating years, mostly I'O's, did some of them leak for some wierd reason?? Yeah they did, and now I know why, but did the motor and outdrive suddenly de-part the hull?? No not ever.........You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on Poly and 1708.

Sorry you took truthfulness for being mean..... The boat was designed with those stringers for a reason.....not just because some figured what the heck lets put 4....

And RIDEPATE The original boat lasted 33 years with all of it's stringers

IMO it's not a safe boat to be bringing friends and family out boating in....

We rebuild boats overkill for a reason.....To make it safer and stronger then when it was built..... I know I will never have to worry about the people aboard my vessel

".........You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on Poly and 1708."

This is a true statement.....^^ My 21' er cost me $750 in glass and resin to rebuild the stringers and deck ;)

Re: Can u use pool noodles in stead of flotation foam

Tass, I am doing a boat right now that someone else had just "done enough to make it work". What a mess I have now. Wish they had never touched the thing, but I too with a family of 5 am on a real tight budget. So lets see what that will mean to me to make this work.

I am replacing all 4 stringers, doing hull work and gell coat on the outside then have to paint my hull, (baby blue gel coat is not to my liking). I have a steering cable that needs replacing and stern drive that I want to go through, and then there is the trailer. With that I might be lucky to put the boat in the water by late August, maybe, and even with that it is maybe 2 seats in it, but hey I can get the others done when I can, but at least I am out and out in a safe boat. So since I didn't have a boat last year if it takes me 2 years to get done it doesn't matter as long as it is done right. My family and friends are worth way more than doing a shotty job just to get out on the water.

I will agree that boat needs to be either redone correctly or sent to the chopper and have it cut up for road repair. It is not worth it to put yourself and others at risk cause you cut corners cause of a budget, that is never an excuse. If that is all you got then you may need to think about can I even afford the up keep on a boat? In my build my length of time to do this is my budget......save a few 100 here and there and be able to get the supplies that are correct. I wanted to get my 2 cents in here cause I am cussing and swearing at the fools that attempted to put a floor in mine prior to me owning it, and seeing the lack of concern is really upsetting.

Hey Tass To put it in a way that is not boat related. You are a diesel mech. think of a truck with only half a frame under it. Or I saved $$ by only putting on the rear brakes. Now are you gonna put your friends and family in it? Same with a boat with only half the stringers and the 2 that are in it still look damaged. Once wood has rot even though you are going to keep it dry now, the rot will still grow under the deck.

I think the foam looks great lots of it. I just hate to see you have to need it to survive in case of a hull failure from stress. The stringers also distribute the force from the motor. When you start up, the motor pushes the boat and the bow raises. It is like a big lever lifting the bow. You just decreased the strength of the lever by 50%.

We all just want to see you safe. Sorry it is not what you wanted to hear. And I do hope sincerely that your handy work will preform.

Re: Can u use pool noodles in stead of flotation foam

i put only 2 of the 4 stringers back in and im not really worried about that cause i keep it garaged kept when not in the water so it doesnt have any of the outside weather elements exceped when in the water so not to worried about that trust me that boat is gonna be plenty strong enough without them two stringers and everything else is epoxy coated so i think im in goos shape as far as that goes what do u guys think???

Can't help but to comment here as well....even though it's already been said. If you have an engineering degree and have done all the load calculations and know the others stringers aren't needed then that's fine. (I doubt this is the case) So many times guys overkill the he** out of the restore, but never the other way.

I can't stress enough to take the advice given here and at the very least, don't sell it to anyone after you're done with it. If you're comfortable with it...okay, but just don't subject someone else to it.

Oh and avoid the rough water all you can. We all care very much about everyone's saftey here.

Re: Can u use pool noodles in stead of flotation foam

I too am doing my first restore. I have been following everyone advice on here to a tee. I dont know much about boats but i do know that if i dont do a step right and something happens to a family member because that step failed, i could never forgive myself. I find myself wondering if i ask to many questions on herr because im allways seeking everyones knowledge on here and they know what theyre talking about. Because i didnt do my homework when i bought this boat( owner said it was lake ready) when i brought it home and started looking through it everything was rotten. If i would have been on the lake that thing would have fallen apart. Please follow their advice for safety reasons.
