Can VRO give me better gas mileage?

1996 70hp johnson w/ vro. I bypassed the vro when i first bought the motor but i am curious; does anyone know in fact for sure that VRO/oil injection could allow the motor to get better gas mileage vs the pre-mix method???

It is doubtful that the VRO would provide better fuel mileage. The motor you are discussing mixes oil and gasoline at about a 60::1 mix, so premixing would use a bit more oil.

That makes sense but is more of a question on gas mileage considering different oil/gas ratios. i guess what i am really curious about is did OMC maybe design the VRO system to function as more than just a luxury of not having to premix? Does it have some type of performance or gas mileage advantages? Just food for thought!

No, Tripp, it doesn't have any performance or gas mileage advantages. I owned a VRO, and by my estimation over a couple of seasons, it used a bit less oil than it would have if I'd mixed it myself at 50:1. Like Chris said, VRO more precisely adjusts the fuel:eek:il ratio based on engine RPM. Aside from convenience, that's all it provides.

The oms was an up graded vro and mixed oil and fuel at a constant 50;1 ratio.

yes i am reading that OMS is basically VRO2. Same system just upgraded internal parts to withstand a higher wear and tear. I guess they stopped writing VRO (or VRO2/OMS) on the coulings as well due to all the hype about the earlier models system failing?
