Hey Ozark,
How did you approach this? Did you take one apart (reverse engineer) or design it from scratch based on theory (clean room)? Do I endersatnd you to say it replaces the coils as well as the CDI box? And do you mean the ignition coils or the stator coils?

Hey Bill,

from scratch, replacing the ignition coil as well.

The stator has nothing to do with the ignition system on my old 1970 80HP merc, it simply charges the battery.

The ignition is powered from the battery.

like I said though, I didnt build in any timing change, or RPM limiter , so im unsure if thats why it wont run right, or if there is some other problem with the engine.

the engine sat for years, so there could be alot of things wrong with it.

If I could test it on another engine, I would package and sell the whole deal, and it would be fairly cheap.

My knowledge on this is pretty limited, but the Mercs I am familier with have had a pretty substantial increase in timing as part of the throttle linkage set-up. Are you saying your box does not increase the timing at all? If so, it does seem like that would keep you from getting very far off of idle.

Re: Can you build a switchbox?

My box relies on the mechanical advance of the distributor only.

there is no "Timing Curve" built into my box, I assume there wasnt one built into the Merc box either, if there were, there would be no need for cumbersome linkage to advance the distributor in relation to the carb opening.

Most newer 2 strokes, use a static timing, and rely on a "preprogrammed" curve that is dependant upon RPM. this is harder to build in.

my box leaves all of that linkage intact, it simply replaces the switchbox, and the coil, with one unit, wires straight to the battery and the on/off switch. Its more durable, and its cheaper than the merc parts, and alot more reliable. It will also fit any engine that has points or electronic ignition that has a distributor.

If there were a market Id buy more materials and make a few, ut as I said my engine has other issues, so I need another test bed, or more time to sort this one out.

It wi
