Just wondering if you can change outdrives. I have a 400 stringer outdrive and is there a replacement you can change it to if I wanted?

What drive do you have in mind? The hole in your transom is going to be a big hurdle if your answer is Merc, SEI or Cobra. Probably easier/cheaper to buy a boat with newer equipment already on it.

No, doubt that...

But really....

Probably easier/cheaper to buy a boat with newer equipment already on it.

Unless you have a super sentimental attachment to the boat the road you are headed down may be a painful and/or expensive one.

All the best!:welcome:

an 800 series will bolt right on as long as it is the same generation (hydromech or full mech).
Otherwise, no. You would need to do a major plywood and fiberglass mod to put any sort of gimballed drive setup on.

Well what if you cut out the old transom and put a piece of transom in from a later model boat, with say a merc outdrive and used aluminum plates bolted on both sides of the transom. and left, right and bottom side and sealed it. Could I use the same 4cyl 120hp motor with that? Thanks

I'd think getting the "X Dimension" would be super tough going that route.

Also, if you go Merc outdrive, then you are talking about an entirely new driveline, the whole thing, meaning everything.

Ayuh,.... If you replace the transom, Properly, rather than like ya say,...
'n mount a Merc drive, ONLY the Long Block from yer motor could be reused...

So, it really ain't economically feasible that way, the accessories for the motor are worth more than the Long block is...
'n an OMC stringer dressed motor, Won't work on a Merc drive...

JMHO. Keep the boat the way it is or buy a new one.
