Can you explain the appeal of Short Socks?

I know; hardly a "tech topic".....

I see more and more people wearing these "short socks"...barely covering the ankle.

What's up with those; anyway? They look so uncomfortable...looks like they'd always slip under the heel.

Is it a style/fashion thing....or is there some other reason that I'm not thinking of.

Must be a style thing. Trying to look like no socks, but I don't understand that appeal either.

Another possibility in summer. Maybe they don't want white ankles below brown calves.

Women have had em for years. I don't know that I've seen men wear them? Heck, some men haven't graduated to 1/2 socks yet.

It has been common in running and cycleing a LONG time i guess it just worked its way down the fashion chain


A skinsuit with with full socks looks a bit strange even if you get past the skin suit

I wear them in the summer. Partly because women find my ankles extremely, umm, erotic.. Secondly, they are cooler, and I don't like the look of knee high socks with shorts. When I wear the standard kind in the summer, I usually push them down anyway..

I wear the shorties in the summer. They keep your calves cooler. It's either the shorties or nothing and I can't stand sweaty feet....

What's the point of a full length sock when it's hot and humid? Unless you need support hose for your vericose veins....

I wear them because I cant stand the look of having 6" of sock rolled up at my ankle when I am wearing shorts. Keeps things cooler and drier.

Only time I wear tube socks is with my work boots or with snow boots......

Just what are these "snow Boots" and do they melt when they get above 32 deg F.

As for the short socks it's a summer/tan thing in these parts. Nothing looks dorkier than a tan that stops mid calf.

I am getting into short socks too. Yes, the no sock look, but more importantly the best of both worlds, cool all the way to the shoe and feels like a sock. Also, a decent pair does not slip down or I would have canned it right there. I flippin' hate that :|

I'm a short socker too for the same reasons stated above. I only have a few pair but I grab those first with shorts, otherwise I just wear the regular ones and push 'em down.

JB and Rubberfrog have it right. They are cooler and you dont have an unsightly SOCK tan around your calf. I dont like sweaty feet either so I wear them. They do not slip down or come off.

They are real big with golfers who wear shorts while playing - men or women - since golf shoes are real uncomfortable with no socks.

I personally don't ever wear shorts playing golf - just don't like the way it looks - but on the boat, it's swim trunks & bare feet all the way 8)

No, ham - I wouldn't do that retro look any justice (I'm built too much like a giant tuning fork). Shorter guys can make it work, though. Strictly Dockers & Izod slacks here.

For me it's either the real short socks with shorts for the reasons stated or honest to god over the calf (I mean just barely below the knee!) tube socks with long pants. I HATE "crew length" socks. They always fall down and I'm constantly pulling them up. I have to admit that it's almost impossible to find tube socks that are tall enough to stay up and I'm average in height and build. This tells me that I'm a freak in this regard, but I know what I like.

A man can wear the short socks as long as there isn't a little pom pom above the heel.

I like work socks in the winter and sport socks in the summer and if it gets hot sandles with no socks.

I wear them but for different reasons.
I have bad circulation in my legs and the tube type sock will cut it off and make my legs swell.
Most of the time it's no socks at all except when I go out or when I go on my run each night.

Got a pair on right now - more comfortable than the mid calf socks, keep feet from sweating and stinking, in summer they look better with shorts, but all in all, just more comfortable.

Simple reason - take a wiff of your Docksiders after you've worn them all day with no socks on. You can smell them from the other end of the marina.
So the short ones are cool (temperature wise), don't leave that weird tan line, and you don't stink up your shoes or sneakers
