I was trying to change water impeller on my Crownline 180 BR with mercruiser 3.0 engine, alpha 1 gen II stern drive. These pair of metallic objects fell out when I pulled the lower unit the items in the pic below fell down with the filler wall. I looked at parts diagram for the upper and lower unit I could not find any part that looks like these.

Can you pls help me identify what they are and where they go on the drive. Thank you!

Part of the exhaust shutter, found in the exhaust pipe just below the elbow. Pull your elbow off and put a new shutter in (and yes, they are needed). Need to know your engine serial number to help any further.

if the shutter rubber burnt up, inspect the rubber exhaust hoses. the motor suffered an overheat or a raw water pump failure.

rubber bits in the exhaust are good for 250F max. the temperature of exhaust and water is about 220F. the temperature of exhaust without water is between 900 and 1200f
