Can you ID my engine?

I bought an old Sears engine from a local auction for $25. It is model # 571.58301. For the sake of my life, I can't find the serial number. Much of the paint is missing, but I would have assumed they would have stamped it somewhere. <br /><br />There is a blank serial number space on the plate that the ignition components sit on. That area also has a model number stamped SPEC FW: 1724. There is also a number stamped on the power head that says: 18030 and then has the BDC logo next to it. <br /><br />Can anyone ID this thing? Fuel mixtue ratio? It's somewhere between 2-5 HP, air-cooled and has a constant forward drive. It has/had green paint and definately has Sears & Robuck painted on the cover.<br /><br />And yes, I did get it running, but I'm having problems with the carb leaking and flooding the throat. I'm working on the float and check valve right now.<br /><br />Thanks for the help!<br /><br />Peter

Sears model 571.58301 a West Bend built 1950 or 1951 1.25hp single cylinder engine.<br />The fuelil ratio is 16:1 87 octane gas to TC (not TCW!) chain saw engine type two stroke oil.<br />If the float is sinking, you might want to try drying and painting it with airplane dope from the model shop, or I've heard PVC cement works well too.<br /><br />Good luck!

Alright, thanks!<br /><br />New Question: I need to order a carb rebuild kit because the one I have now is leaking badly. It is a Tillotson carb and the only markings on it are M D I A. Shouldn't there be a number stamped on it somewhere too? Also, where is a good place I can order the kit?<br /><br />Thanks again,<br /><br />Peter

Laing's outboard sells the Tillotson MD 1 carb kit, but it doesn't seem to have some of the parts I think you'll need (float, needle and seat). <br />You could also try Twin City Outboards - they seem to have everything.<br /> <br />Good luck!
