Me either. I wouldn't want to mess with a guy who could pull-start a 200HP motor. There may be a way but I don't know what it is. Does the flywheel even have the notches in it for pull-starting?

yes it does have notches and it came with the rope in a pouch atttached to the cowl...I'm working on fixing the starter/battery soon.

I have seen older motors like that: they expect you to pull a 200.... I wouldnt even waste my time trying. That didnt last long only a few years im sure no one has really tryed to pull it over. I would be scared of the person who could!!!

Pull started my late model Mercury 3 cylinder 40 HP several times 'cause I trolled the battery dead...(same as 50/60 HP). Pistons are about the same size as a early 120 cu in.
V-6..takes some omph though....can only pull about 2 pistons through at a time...Mixture has to be jus rite to fire.

I have pull started my 140 but don't expect the motor to spin like a lawn mower when you pull it. You will only get it to turn over maybe 3 revolutions. It ain't no fun.

Hello.
Yes it can be done and you don't have to be that strong.
Loosen the plugs just a little bit.Enough for compression to escape and it becomes possible.
This is not very healthy for the engine but it will get you off the water before you freeze.
You might want to use a wee bit of ether.
Don't try unless you have no choice.
Good luck.

Make sure you have the key on. A friend of mine pulled his 115 for about 15 minutes before he turned the ignition switch on. Fired first time he pulled it after that....
Dave

I watched a guy at a boat ramp brag about how he could get a 150 Merc. started with a rope.
After it popped/backfired they took him to the emergency room for stitches in his hands and broken fingers. It came really close to wrapping HIM up in the flywheel.

Re: can you pull start a v6 merc 200hp

I rope started a 150 crossflow once. Luckily the motor was tuned and running good.

I watched a buddy rope start a V8 Evinrude. 3 times! We met via boats at a race and when we went to leave his starter was shot. I looked around and got ready to pull him to a ramp somewhere when I saw him climb out on the Gil bracket with a rope. My thought was - NO WAY!. Well, he did. I figured he would head back home but he went with us to a restaurant for lunch and then later to a beach to swim. He shut it off both places and roped it both times. And he's not a particularily big guy.

Just glad it wasnt me!

Hah!!!!!!!!! I have everyone beat..... I have started my 300 (3.4L) merc on a couple of occasions. and yes, that is what the emergency rope in the cowling is for. Wow I really am tough, I think I can bench press 500 lbs..........Anyway BigKash, It is done from 2 hp to 300 hp in the outboard world. That probably why we all put so much emphasis on good batteries and charging systems...... Goodluck, BushCat

Let me post a little caution for safety sake. Make darn sure you have plenty of room and there is nobody, especially kids, any where close to the rear of the boat. That rope is going to come off the flywheel like a bullwhip when you pull start one of these beast. You don't want to pop anybody with it.
