Re: can you replace a rotten transom with stainless steel

i actually just found a link on ehow.com regarding cutting the top of the transom out and taking the wood out and then filling it with fiberglass filler/seacrest. it made it seem way to easy to be true though?? anyone attempted this. i see you say there's a little more to it....what else needs to be done? Also the outside fiberglass on the bottom around the drain is slightly cracked. can this approach be done with the fiberglass in that shape and just not worry about the fiberglass since the seacrest doesnt mold or rot anyway. or do we need to worry about the fiberglass. never worked with it before and that's my main fear trying to do it myself thanks

MJH,

You have an I/O with an OutDrive that demands critical and demanding specifications for mounting it to the motor. Making a transom for this style of boat is MUCH more of a specialized tasks than making one for an Outboard style motor. You REALLY need to do a Search here on the forum on How to replace the transom on an I/O boat and start to learn the correct process for this. There is NO easy FAST way to do this. It takes a lot of time and effort to do it safely and correctly. There is NO MAGIC FAST QUICK way to get this done!!!!!

MJH,

Woodonglass is telling you the Dead on truth. There is no way this will work. Out side of not being able to mount the motor and out drive you will have no way to tie in the stringers to the transom.
Take a look at Friscoboaters thread. He has some very good vid's on his transom repair.
Good luck with your adventure.
