Can you tell me what's normal - cables, controller, idle

Just purchased a 1997 Bayliner Capr with a 3.0 / Alpha and have a few questions.

The operation of the Quicksilver 3000 controller works... it's just stiffer than I expected, but I'm not sure it's just cables. Here's what I've got and checked:

1. From straight-up through the initial shift portion of movement, the movement is stiff but operates.

2. At the end of the shift portion, it gets a little stiffer for a second, and then proceeds into throttle movement which is again stiffer than what I expected but less than the shifting portion. Both the shifting portion and throttle portion are looser in reverse.

3. Throttle only movement is pretty smooth and easy.

4. I disconnected the shifting cable at the shift-assist linkage and the cable seems to travel relatively smoothly and easily (but I suppose that's relative). The lower end cable from the linkage to the drive also moves smoothly and easily. When everything's connected, it stiffens up a lot.

5. The cable does not have any sharp turns or kinks that I'm aware of.

What am I missing that is causing it to be stiff and how does that compare to "normal"? How different is your controller between throttle-only and throttle-with-shifting? After reading a lot, I figured it was the cable, but it appears to move well and freely when disconnected. I noticed that the shut-out seems to roll to the high spot when shifting forward but not reverse. Is the cable out of adjustment causing that and is one cable over-traveling? I've read where you don't lube the cables (and simply replace), but is there something on the back side of the controller that requires lube?

Next topic: Idle
Engine runs great, but seems to idle a little like it's loading up a bit and/or the idle is set too low. Maybe choke adjustment? When your 3.0 idles, does it have any loping or shake in it like an engine with a heavy cam, or should it purr evenly and balanced like an engine in a compact car (sewing machine like)?

Thanks for any tips!

Easiest way to diagnose the shifter is to disconnect both cables at the shifter, if it then shifts and moves smoothly, it is good, otherwise replace the shifter. If one of the cables is sticky, replace them both. Might as well do it once and cables are cheap. On the idle, 3.0 motors do not idle like a sewing machine, more like a loping big block with a steep cam profile.
