Either way.....Some are mounted to the very rear of the bilge so it may pump more water while under way...

usually better to run it while you're under way. depending on pump's location, it will get more water out. or, if you run it back at the dock, just remember to remove the plugs once its trailered to get the remaining water out.

Perfect thanks that what i thought but didnt want to mess anything up since repairs are very expensive.

Sounds like you only have one bilge pump. My 2cents is to have two at least, just in case. but yes run while underway, then shut off after a while. I have two, one manual, one automatic.

Agree 110 % with mphy98.

I am rebuilding my boat with one pump with a built in auto, directly to the deep cycle. Inserting an indicator, light or buzzer or both.

And then Another pump with a float switch for the overflow of the "normal water".

And keeping the largest colapsible bucket on board that I can find space for.

Thats So my brother can bail while I figure out why we still have water in the boat...

Maybe just my deal but I think that Redundacy is Critical on the water. .

If the boat is taking on water whether you are underway or stopped, don't you think it would be ok to run the pump rather than sink? I don't mean to sound critical but what makes you think it would be necessary to run it only when stopped?
