Re: Canada scraps Gun Registry

The hand gun acquisition permit and registration is a good thing.
It leaves new handgun ownership with a informed safety
minded experience. leaving young people
who take up the sport with the proper understanding
and appreciation of it. In order to legally obtain
a hand gun, you need to pass a written test and
be able to show a keen understanding of safe firearm
handling. The restrictions for transport
for the sport of shooting are not all intrusive and
enable with applied permit, allow for 24/7, 365
days a year transportation of a hand gun.
Of course I am speaking of Canadian Laws.

Any one who wanted to get a handgun bad enough
would be able to acquire one illegally regardless
of a registration or a permit anyway. So all this fuss about registration is merely a disguise
for control, with the end goal being to confiscate at a later date.

Nosleep, just heard on QR770 that the Auditor General report will be out in a few days and the true cost of the gun registry is much grater than Canadians think. Maybe interesting. Some are saying Harper won't have the support to get rid of it; but, if the cost are really high -- might get legs. Especially with the need to cut the queue's in the health system.

Hang'n In. The scrapping of the gun registry was a campaign
promise from the Conservative government. They
were democratically elected and have full authority
to cancel this beleaguered program. Yes
their is a small opposition to the campaign promise.
It stands little chance of changing this direction.

I'm familiar with Ontario, not Alberta, of course, and I am certainly not saying that it would be impossible to illegally aquire a handgun in Ontario. It would be reasonably difficult, and it would be a huge story up here if it came out that a kid could get one from a buddy at school.

Don't get caught trying to cross the border into Canada with a handgun as well. You'll face serious charges if caught and likely lose your vehicle as well.

And evidence? All the statistics. Every developed country with restrictive laws on handguns and such have far fewer incidents of handgun related crimes than the US.

PW2, It requires an accredited course, or challenge
of the course to begin the process of legally
obtaining a handgun. Or a separate course for
long guns. Children can not purchase firearms or
be in possession of them with out adult
supervision.
It probably is not enforceable on a farm or in
private.
All evidence shows the population of the U.S. is
in direct proportion to its crime rate with firearms
statistics. It would be interesting to know what
the Soviet Union or China's real firearm related statistics are.

Ya Know,........ It's a funny thing about Statistics...............

For every study, written by the CDC, or the UN, or any other Left Leaning organization, that you can come up with to support Your arguement,...........

I can come up with 2 more studies that Dispute your studies,...... That used the Same Statistics, to come up with Opposite Conclusions........

So,...... Tell me Why the Crime Rates have fallin like a stone since Fla.,+ Tx. became Concealed Carry states..............

Yet,... In DC, Where Guns have been Illegal for Along Time,....... The Crime Rates continue to Climb...........

PW2, I take it you are unable to back up your assertion with valid stats. Somehow I am not surprised.

PW2
gotta disagree on this one. so far I have seen no correlation on registered guns and crime. its very rare to have a crime traced to the legal owner of a legal gun.
I do favor background checks, I favor denying convicted felons and certain other groups the right to keep and bear arms.
however if I want a full auto .45 cal tommy gun it should be my right to have one.
I will agree to a law requireing any gun owner pass a profiency test with the madel group of weapon owned or carried.
an ignorant gun owner is a big a danger to themselves as others.
but in modern times look at Venezuela, Chavez outlawed privete gun ownership and carrying permits. the crimminals dont sweat such minor details and the gun crime violence has gone nuts since 98, prior to 98 gun crime was actually rare in that country as the guy you pulled a weapon on was liklly to shoot you back however the criminals are less fearless now as odds are in their favor.
if I was gonna break into a house I would pick MA or NY or one of those lily states as I would be armed and odds are the occupants would not, cops only take reports.
I would NOT do it in my area, south AL,MS or TX or many other places cause the odds are the occupants are armed and will most likly shoot me and get a medal.
