Hello

Someone told me that the lower end could crack if water is in the oil and it freezes. How likely is this? It’s starting to freeze here and I really don’t want to change the oil in all the motors. What’s the next best safety precaution? I have a 1946 5h Johnson that was laying around a barn for years
the lower end seems empty, should something be done to prevent corrosion?
The gas conditioner I have says “run through motor” is this necessary if the motors get fogged anyway?

it's pretty easy to tell if you have water in the gear case.open the drain screw in the lower
unit, if there's water in it, the oil will be
a milky brown color.
if there's no oil in it, fill it up.
it will take less that a litre of lube.

the fuel stabiizer is to prolong the gas life
if the motor is fogged, no need to run the gas through.

When you plan to put that engine back in service pay particular attention to servicing and checking the lower unit. If it has sat for years without oil it may already be damaged.

The fuel stabilizer in the gas, when run through the engine will help prevent the fuel in the carb. from turning to varnish. That will be a real problem when you try to recomission in the spring.

Thanks scotty

One of the motors did have that look even though I changed it's oil early sept. The washer was off the top screw maybe that caused it.
