doing some reading per the BC license thread below....
and just learned Canadian licences are only good for 10 years
Due to recent changes in the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, pleasure craft licences are now valid for
10 years. If there are changes to your name or particulars of your vessel or address in that time,
you must update your licence

http://www.tc.gc.ca/wwwdocs/Forms/84-0172E_1204-05_E.pdf
never noticed the renewal box on there before
have you renewed yours?
I have two out of date.

number of times I have ever been stopped on the water in 40 years of boating: 0

not sure if I'll bother renewing. Address has not changed.

Murphy's law will prevail - if you don't renew you will be stopped for the first time!:(

Also, won't an out-of-date licence cause difficulties if/when you try and sell your boat

^ voice of reason...

neither of my "expired" licences say anything about expiry or renewal, but yeah.. ignorance is not an excuse
I'll try renewing one and see how it goes

The bigger problem is when you buy a boat that has changed owners a few times and although the title is valid the numbers on the boat aren't. And you can't get new numbers.
One of my buds had trouble like this and it took forever to find the two previous owners.
