Cannot properly adjust linkage to maintain F & R

1992 criscraft concept with 351w and king cobra outboard. Cannot get it to maintain F and R direction. Boat purchased 18 - 24 months ago and prior had about a 7 year stint in storage. Looking for best recommendations for repair. Cosidering replacing cable but do not have correct adjustment procedures to install newone.

Howdy,

I'll assume you're talking about a King Cobra Stern Drive...

If you do not have a correct OEM OMC service manual you should not even attempt it.

I would be willing to bet that your lower shift cable is either corroded from sitting all those years or was not adjusted correctly from before. In either case you should not try to run it at all until the cable gets inspected/adjusted and replaced if needed.

If you do a search of this site you'll find a LOT of info on lower shift cables and the like. You probably need to find someone who works on Cobras to fix it for you. Based on your year model and engine you may have a Dog-Clutch model.

Ok. I am pretty savy when it comes to learning as I go and do not wish to physically continue further until I have more information. When in reference to lower cable, are you speaking of the cable that goes from the rocker (in engine compartment) to the control know at the steering wheel, or the cable going from the rocker (in engine compartment) to the outdrive?

Engine to outdrive lower shift cable, pull the outdrive off for starters that way you check all the bellows and universals too.

So I am in need for the adjustment procedures or troubleshooting procedures. The outboard hs been recently pulled to inspect and replace gimble bearings. All universals are good. tried minor adjustments on shift cable. Still no R, F is bogging like the E-brake is on and the clutches are burning. Either I am not respecting the sensitivity of the adjustment or something else is wrong. Any ideas or information. 1992 CrisCraft Concept with 5.8L 351 windsor engine and omc King Cobra outdrive. Any information, ideas or material/literature would be appreciated. Thanks

Does your outdrive look like this one? If so then you need this book.
