Re: Canoe in two Project launched (pics)

I'm not sure why I didnt think about it not having chines but i'm sure I could add them with the convieniant shape of the bottom. I've built outriggers now but still need to seal and paint them. gonna put a rib lengthwise to mimic the one on the bottom of the canoe. Can anyone think of any reason that I shouldnt fill the outriggers with "great stuff" expanding foam before I seal them shut? These are 3.5' long and 7" wide. Think this will help with buoyancy at the rear? I intend to mount them with 6" - 12" of them hanging behind the back of the boat. Comments and suggestions welcomed on any part of this project. :D Still unsure of how I want to mount them but I'm thinking about 2" conduit. <br />

If they leaked at all you'd never get the water out of the foam. I'd leave them hollow. If they got water in them you could drill a hole in the top, drain the water then seal the hole.

I wouldn't even put tops on them so you could use them for storage.

I have to figure that when just floating with a full load of motor, gas, and me that these will be drafting 2 to 3 inches of water... they are only 4¼" deep. I'm thinking when they fill up with water cause of the lack of tops, that they will no longer do their job. then my stuff is wet too :D ... need canoe sized outriggers... A trihull anyone?

Use your outriggers to hold the gas - configure gas tanks in them and run the fuel lines through the conduit. Then you are ready for the 15, oops, 5 hp engine. Will help to balance the weight and give you more room in your canoe!

Why not go with a smaller outboard...like a 3hp with interior fuel tank. You would save weight and that thing doesn't need 5hp to get you moving. You could really cover some water on very little fuel that way

Re: Canoe in two Project launched (pics)

lol I want the rush of TOO fast... also I could use a larger motor as a backup on my bigger boat if I wanted. I need to figure out what kind of speed I could get out of a 3hp... are they a lot stronger or faster than a higher thrust trolling motor?

Where'd you get that thing,..???? Oh,.. Checked your Pics,..<br />I see it has a keel,.... Is it Fiberglass,.. Or Plastic,..???<br />You need a Steering Wheel,+ Controls so you can sit proper in the seat,......... :D It looks like it Balances Better when you're seated right.......<br /><br />It looks an Awful Lot like My Snowboat.......<br />

<br /><br />Mines a Scrap 1/2 a Canoe from the Old Town Canoe Co........<br /><br /><br />I have a 40something lbs. thrust ele. motor for My Canoe,.... I just clamp it to the side of the canoe,+ Go with it,.....<br />In the Quest for Speed,........ :D <br />I took the 2 blade prop that came with the motor,+ Heated the blades,+ Added More Pitch,............<br />It didn't come out Too Bad,...... Only Viberates when you Really Get On It,........ It's Alot Faster.....<br />'Course,..... My Canoe is Still 16' Long,+ Pointed at Both Ends.................. ;) <br /><br />Why not just use Foam Blocks for the Outriggers,..???<br />It'll Carve alot easier than Plywood Bends........... <br />I've also catamaraned 2 canoes together with nothing more than a couple of 2X4s,+ Bungie Straps,...... <br />That worked Great.......

Re: Canoe in two Project launched (pics)

Dude that is awesome. We used old pickup truck hoods (50's style) as tow behind sleds when I was a kid. (hmmmm another boat idea?) Its fiberglass. It was complete. My transom was built from two pieces of 3/4" plywood screwed and glued in place then fiberglassed to the boat. Not yet painted. I thought about foam carved outriggers but I wasnt sure how to make it strong enough to hold them to the canoe under load from a motor. Just purchased an older 4 hp johnson for it. I fully intend to create a dashboard for it and hook up throttle and steering controls.(if it works good enough I might finish it with a speedo and a windscreen. :D I was using a 36 lb thrust trolling motor and it went pretty decent though I think it was slowed down a lot from lack of buoyancy and drafting too much water. I considered creating an antiventilation plate on the trolling motor because I could tell it was cavitating a lot. :D Big Plans... we'll see how it turns out. Hoping it ends up as cool in real life as it is in my head.

Being a fiberglass hull,........<br /><br />You can Easily carve a set of sponsons to fit the back 2/3rds of the hull,+ Glue them on with Epoxy,..........<br />Maybe incorporate some Hull Lift with them,...... :D <br /><br />Epoxy,.. Unlike Polyester resins are Usually more Foam Friendly,......<br /><br />Ayuh,.....<br /><br />Throw on a couple layers of Glass,+ Take a Hammer to the blades on that 4hp Prop,.......... <br />It's going to Need More Pitch,...................... ;) <br /><br />I can See it Now,...........

Curiosity, how do you do a good even carve on the hard foam? Kitchen knife? Sharp spoon? :D Is there anywhere faster to aquire epoxy than ordering online? ie home depot or hardware store do you have any recommendations on brand? <br /><br />I like the idea of sponsons on the side but I have to try the outriggers since I have so much blood sweat and tears into that wood bend already. :) <br /><br />Have you seen the motor? :) What kind of speed ya think that motor would push a regular canoe as it sits? guessing of course.<br /><br />Its refreshing to see some posts that emit positive overtones in their suggestions no matter how crazy or stupid the idea of a canoe in two with a motor. :D

Got it on bookmark :) Thanks... gonna try my hand at carving some sponsons for the other half when the time comes... Might get this stuff ordered for any or every project in between just to have it on hand and in stock :D <br />Does epoxy act like a resin? in respects to sanding, shaping, etc etc

Re: Canoe in two Project launched (pics)

Just did a few hours of reading and viewing pictures on differant methods of boat building and now I think I can do much better on outriggers now that I've seen the other methods.. Still gonna try these on for size just to see how buoyant they are and adjust sizes accordingly. <br />I'm also hoping the motor gets in before the weekend. Gotta get these riggers in shape and take it out to see how it handles.. wondering if i'll need a skeg. :) <br /> <br />Anyone want to take bets on top speed with a 70's 4hp johnson on it? (provided it runs - ebay purchase)

Perfect... I just happen to work with 12 volt in my buisness :) Funny they mention "But the cost is high unless you happen to be a geek with a couple of variacs sitting around in the garage." And I just happen to have all the neccesary equipment sitting around in the garage. :)

Why not a weed wacker motor?<br /><br />You could put 1 in each outrigger<br /><br />Then sit back with the throttle control and GO!<br /><br />I bet if you got going fast enough you could get enough lift to push the canoe out of the water like a real hydrofoil does.<br /><br />I know people put them in model boats to make em go about 50mph - so someone has already figured out how to attach a prop to them.<br /><br />You can pick up used weed wackers at garage sales everywhere. Even a cheap new one is probably the cost of a good battery.

Re: Canoe in two Project launched (pics)

But thats a model boat without my dead weight in it :) I'm not sure how I would seal the hole where the shaft goes through. or how to attach a prop :)
