Re: Canon dSLR lenses... opinions?

The 70-300 is pretty good in my opinion. I love it. (I believe the call this one a beer can) Huh, go figure!!!
I use mine most of the time but there are situations where you will need a different lens.
I have Minolta 5d. A lens is a lens though.
I take most of my picture outside so it works for me.
theres the little lady's horse, a friends kids and my dog wander around in Pymatuning lake in the fall.

That's definitely not true. The quality of the glass, the quality of the case, how perfectly the lenses are cleaned and lined up prior to assembly and how well the lens produces a picture on the CCD of the camera are all big things when chosing a lens.

"A lens is a lens" is like saying "a car is a car" without acknowledging quality differences between the multitude of cars out there.

I agree with some here, and disagree with others.

Go for L glass and low f-stop and ditch the IS.

IS can't compensate for poor conditions; f-stop can.

Get 2.8 glass if you can and move on with life :)

My one exception to the low f-stop rule is the 70-200m F4L; it's great for outdoors and I love mine.

Tim,

I am going to have to disagree with the "Lens is a Lens' statement, I can guarantee you, my 600mm f/4 IS Canon is a heck of a lot better than the run of the mill aftermarket Kalimar 600mm f/8 lens and my 300mm f/2.8 Canon is noticably better than any of the Tamorn 300 f/2.8 lenses I have owned over the many years I have taken pictures, I know in the digital world, we have a lot more flexibility to correct things, but I started out shooting slow Kodachome ISO 25 film and moved to E-6 ISO 50 Velvia Slide film, where if you made a mistake, you threw the slide away. Even in this day and age, I still do about 60% of my shooting on slide film and there ain't no fixing it, if you don't do it right the first time...and part of doing it right, is having the best glass you can..

I stand corrected.
Actually, I really kinda meant it differently.
Those pictures were taken with my "beer can". Its an Albinar 75-200. 1:4.5 Macro Zoom.
I got it for 50 bucks on Ebay and it takes sweet pictures.
I need to be more careful. I was misleading on my post.
thanks guys.
