This falls into the "can't possibly be true" catagory. I saw this in my area's craigslist section. I was like "ah, yeah right". Something smells fishy.

Scammers must think boaters are stupid or something. This is why I would support craigslist if they decide to charge a listing fee.

What's the scam exactly? Of course the price is whacked.

Is it the old "send me a deposit", thing? Isn't that tired? Has it gotten more interesting or elaborate or are people still dumb?

Scam.. Recently, I was scouring CL and Kijiji for a Jeep Liberty. It was amazing how many good deals were out there by soldiers returning to Iraq or Afganistan, women who just separated and didn't have a drivers licence, students needing to pay tuition, people leaving the country on a spaceship that will hook up with the mother ship etc.,etc.,etc. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Same thing with cars, RV's, trailers etc.
If you are looking for one on e-bay then go back in and enter the listing number. If it does not come up then it is a scam. report it to e-bay and it will usually be gone in a hurry !!!!
Mrs Ken found a nice one year old 19 ft trailer for dirt cheap. It was a scam :(

When you find those 'too good to be true' ads google the CL title & price. 9 out of 10 you'll see the same boat, car, trailer, etc. listed in two dozen other cities.

what is the scam about it. I mean even if it is fake, what is the poster getting out of it? I just mean what is the scam? I ask because I watch the jobs section in my local CL and I know some of them are fake. I feel Leary to send them my resume to the CL provided email address with my address and phone number in my resume.

They do it for a few different reasons. They want your email address. They'll ask you to send a small deposit. If they get 8-10 idiots to send them $100 deposit they've made a nice little pot. Do that everyday and it adds up.

Re: Can't be true craigslist ad.

Was looking at a fishing boat a while back. Found one for a real good price on CL. Started asking questions, needing the Hull Vin and trailer vin etc.

Kept being told it was all good. Send the money and if I didn't like the boat, I'd get a full refund etc. Purchase was to be done through Ebay (from a CL ad) and Ebay was protecting it blah blah blah.

Finally told him to f off. Posted the whole story on a fishing site as a bit of a warning.

Got a PM from a new guy on the site. He'd sent the guy $~5,500 and, of course, didn't get a boat.

That's why they do it. There are still some very gullible people out there. And they really have no down-side risk as they will never get caught.

Re: Can't be true craigslist ad.

Well to follow up on my original posting, for smiles and grins I sent them an email asking if the price was correct and if it was I would drive down to look at it. It's only an hour's drive from where I live so it should be a simple deal. Here's reply I got.

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my boat. The boat is in perfect condition - like new! If you decide to buy it, you'll receive all the papers, owner manuals, keys, a buy-sell contract already signed by me and the clear title. For this transaction I want to use ebay because I want to provide you a fast and very secure way. They will handle the transaction for me. You will make the payment to ebay and they will hold the money until you receive and inspect the boat. ONLY AFTER you receive and inspect it (you have 5 days for inspection) ebay will release the payment to me. The inspection time period will begin as soon as you receive the boat at your address. Meanwhile eBay will hold the money into a trust account. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the boat before you decide to buy it. This way we are both protected : i will know that i have a serious buyer who has the money to pay me and you will be able to see and inspect the boat before buying it .
The boat is priced to sell quickly and the final price that I'm asking for it is $5,800 including shipping and handling costs. My husband died 3 months ago and I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and move to my parents. I can't afford to take days off my work for this sale so i'm trying to sell it online.
If you are really interested in purchasing the boat please send me your full name, shipping address and your phone number. Ebay will give you all the details regarding the shipping and payment.
I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

Regards!

Re: Can't be true craigslist ad.

you should mess with the worm poop and ask about buying the house that she "decided to sell". Dumbass scammer using the same scheme over and over.

And ask for the eBay item number. I like costing them time.

Re: Can't be true craigslist ad.

funny how often that message makes the rounds. last summer while looking for a pontoon, i found one for 5,800....a 2005 Bennington. we exchanged e-mails,and i kept insisting that i would only deal face to face. one day i received an e-mail claiming that she was desperate to sell it TODAY and the price had been dropped to 5,000, but i had to pay immediately as the moving company wanted money. luckily, she had a brother in law who worked at a shipping company and he had arranged for free shipping to my area. odd, the ad said she was in salt lake city, same as me....so why would i need it shipped?

couple weeks later, i found the same ad in Boise,Idaho...Evanston,Wyoming...Phoenix Arizona...and the Inland Empire section of California. same price, same pics

one thing i would suggest, when dealing with stuff like this, use a throw away e-mail address. its easy to sign up for a hotmail or live.com address thru the MSN home page

Re: Can't be true craigslist ad.

Just tell them that you will gladly put money in a trust fund, through your lawyer, if they would kindly send their or their lawyer's contact information. You trust your lawyer more then eBay (we all know eBay doesn't anyways) to hold your money in trust and they don't even have to "ship" the boat because you have no problems driving to look at it, with or without someone available to answer questions.

I thought there was an e-mail address or phone number or something with the FBI that you could report these types of scams. They have the tools to pursue these people and find where they are and last I read, not enough people report these (just laugh at them) to actually dedicate any time to them?

I just picked the boat up and am having a beer in it right now. What a deal! I'm selling my resto boat and am keeping this one. Glad you guys all missed out on this one.

That was all bs by the way :)
