I was watching the bidding on a little 4hp 4 stroke 2001 Yamaha, which retails at $1388 [Canadian] and the bidding closed at $1350, sight unseen-only $38 less than a brand new, warrentied outboard. It sure shows you bidding on any item in an auction can get carried away, and you sure have to know your prices.

Yeah, people get caught up in the auction thing. I've seen two people bid against each other out of pure bloodymindedness, pushing the price of the (used) item to 3x retail.
I don't think it's as bad as you think though. It seems to me that those go for about $1300US new down in the states, which would be something like $1800CDN. Our currency is undervalued - look at what Americans pay for cars. I guess it's good for export.
Someone down there might have better pricing infomation though. Anyone?

nope- $1388 right here in town- and very likely the store this little Yami was bought from 3 years ago.As I dsaid, I can't believe someone would get in a bidding war without knowing what it was worth.I would have paid between $800 to $900 for it- if it was in good shape- but not within 50 bucks of the new price

My point is that Yamaha sells the engine in the states for $1300US, and sells the same engine in Canada for $1388CND. Although the currency exchange is 73c on the dollar, the buying power is close to the same for certain goods. Cars are one, perhaps outboards is another.

if that's the case, then $1388 Canadian is $1017 US at todays exchange rate.Maybe you better come on up, buy a motor and take in a little fishing while you're at it.I'm not all that surprised, either- we sell prescription drugs RIGHT FROM THE SAME MANUFACTUROR at about 50% discounts.Shows you how stuff is priced- whatever the market will bear
