Can't control in reverse

So I can't control the boat in reverse, when I am in reverse it just wants to spin in a circle and when you steer opposite the direction of the circle the best you can do is almost go straight with it turned all the way in one direction. If you turn into the spin it just speeds up the spin like your on a spinning cup ride at Disney! Everything works fine in forward, doesn't try to turn one way or the other. It does this no matter what prop I have on, I was thinking of removing the zinc anode for a test drive and seeing if that changed it. Any ideas??? Prealpha out drive with a chev350 1980 glastron

Go slow - idle. May have to pop into reverse and back into neutral to keep speed down.
Make very minor steering adjustments.
Start to counter steer as soon as the boat starts to turn

Is this a common problem? I personally have never drove a boat that couldn't maneuver in reverse.

I guess I should clarify this is a mechanical problem... not a matter of skill. However I appreciate the response.

Look at the stern drive position while you are in reverse.

If the drive tilts up due to the prop pulling, you can get this result. Engine off, on the trailer... put the throttle in reverse then grab the prop and see if you can pull it back and up, swinging the whole out-drive.

In forward you should be able to pull the prop and lift the drive, as that simulates going over a log, kicking the drive up rather than breaking the transom. In reverse a lock should engage to prevent it.

So I have been doing some reading and... I have updated the cut out shift position sensor and apparently that has to do with my reverse lock, but I have already installed the new trim pump motor so I don't know if I need to buy or install a valve that acts like the reverse lock, does anybody know how this updated plate affects the reverse lock or how to plumb in the trim tilt pump so that it controls the reverse lock?

Ayuh,.... So is the outdrive jumpin' outa the water in reverse, or not,..??

Did ya change the trim pump, 'n it's plumbin', or just the motor on the trim pump,..??

Sorry I've been out of town. Yes the outdrive lifts when you put it in reverse. And yes I replaced the whole trim pump motor and reservoir to the new style with the plastic reservoir under the pump. No I didn't change the plumbing. The new shift plate did not have a way to control the other valve, that I now know is my reverse lock. So I just need to plumb out the old reverse lock, and the new pump should hold it down while in reverse right?

Update. I got it plumbed. I just put a ball valve in line where the reverse lock was, I tested it in the driveway it worked perfect, but it still lifted in the water when I hit reverse, my local hose supply didn't have a 12v ball valve, I think he called it a solenoid switch valve. I'll get one ordered and wire it to a switch so when I want to lock the drive down I can flip a switch. For ex: in the dock area, and around heavy traffic areas. Thanks again for all the help.
