Can't find hour meter

Is it not standard for an i/o to have an hour meter on it? I may be losing my mind, but the first time I looked at the boat I recently bought, I swear the guy showed me the hour meter. I noted the hours as what was advertised and evidently brain-dumped where that d@mn meter is. Is it possible that the boat doesn't have / never had an hour meter? That doesn't seem right because how would you keep track of scheduled maintenance reqs? Where should I look? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Addl info: '96 Chapparal Sunesta w/ 5.7l Volvo-penta

Tey're usually on the dash--my is. A no not all IO's have them. You can add one. Check the question below this one. Good Luck

Check in the engine compartment on the transom. My SeaRay's was there.

Mine is in the speedometer, like the odometer on a car. Key has to be on to see it. Previous owner did not know this boat had an hour meter.

Re: Can't find hour meter

Depends on the boat. I know the brochure that came with my boat listed the hour meter as optional equipment. However I do have one even though it's in an odd place. Inside the engine compartment mounted on one if the inside "walls" close to the battery is where I found mine.

But apparently it's not unusual for a boat to not have one depending on the age of the boat. I imagine most newer models have them.

Hey ddboater,

Did the previous owner tell you the truth about how many hours he thought were on the boat before you bought it? Just Curious

By the condition of the boat, I think the seller was telling the truth. What blows me away is I swear that he showed it to me on that first look. And now I can't find it even though I've looked about everywhere. I'll keep looking, I guess....maybe this is the whole "I should be glad it's not a snake" thing.

Re: Can't find hour meter

FatBack----he told me he had it in the water 6 times---I informed him it had 28 hours on it when I took it for the sea trial before buying.

Actually, he titled this boat in his parents name because he did not want his wife to get it in the divorce settlement.

He was smart about some things.

Anyway, I just remembered on my old Cobalt, the hour meter was mounted on a metal rod right by the oil dipstick.
