Re: cant find motor identification or serial #

Engine model and serial is on an aluminum plate inside the engine, on the lower pan, just about where the fuel line and control line cables enter.

Plate missing? all three and four cylinder engines used the same pump and impeller. Only two variations were used based on years; either before 1978 or after 1979. 1978 or 1979 was the year they redesigned the lower unit--I forget which year exactly.

If the engines have a two piece lower unit with the prop located by a 5/16 pin in the front of the hub, and water pick-ups above the gearcase torpedo, they are earlier than 1978. If they have a one piece lower unit with the prop located by a thrust washer and cooling water pick-ups directly behind the prop hub on the gearcase torpedo, they are later than 1979.

Most marinas and ships stores will not have records for your parts and will refuse to order for you. You may be able to find them on iboats, but if you can not, contact franzmarine@aol.com. He'll have what you need.
