cant find problem/ boat just dies

I have a 1985 mercur 4cyl sterndrive motor, and it just dies and trying to find problem. Boat running fine, then all of a sudden it makes a metalic clank and engine just dies, then if try to start, crank will only move an inch at time, then it lets go and boat starts. then go back out, and it does same thing... Could it be gears on the drive that are binding up and causing engine to stop... Really need to know answers, or something to check...help please...

Could be the drive, or the engine. Best thing to do is pull the drive and try the engine and see if you can duplicate the problem<br />Have you looked at your gear lube? Any metal in it?

Don is right,you have to isolate the problem.When you pull the drive,reach in and see how the gimbal bearing feels .That's my guess.<br /><br />DHP
