Re: cant find that clip for shift rod

Sounds like you have a Seloc or Clymers manual. What you want to do is pull the engine cover and look on the port side of the engine to the rear of the bottom carb. You will see a pair of slightly bent flat rods connected to the shift cable linkage through linkage and if you will look at the other end to the rear of the bottom carb, the shift rod. This is the bell crank assembly. It is held to the block by a large headed bolt and to the shift linkage by a stud and nut. You must separate the bell crank rods to release the shift rod.

Take the nut off the end connected to the shift linkage and separate from the shift linkage. Back out the large headed bolt that keeps the bell crank rods together and attached to the block. If possible, don't take the large headed bolt all the way out. It's a real pain in the patut to get to. The idea is to keep the bell crank assembly together but lose enough to release the shift rod. Once the shift rod is free, the lower unit should slip right off.

A word of caution, the shift rod height is set to a certain height. Don't turn it out or in.

Good Luck!
