Can't fit wrench around spark plugs! 1979 Evinrude 35hp

I've had a great 1979 Evinrude 35hp motor for the past few years. It's top notch except for one problem. I can't get any tool that I own to fit around the spark plugs. None of my spark plug sockets fit and I can't get a regular wrench or pliers around them. The problem is that the plugs are seated at an angle too close to the engine block. When you try to use a wrench/pliers/socket it hits the engine block instead of sliding over/around the plug.

Has anyone ever had this problem before? Is there a remedy? If my description is too vague I can post some pics tonight.

You need a spark plug socket, 13/16" size...

You may want to try a thin walled 12 point 13/16 socket..

Hmmm, a thin-walled plug socket. I haven't heard of one of those (my ignorance). I'll go looking around for one.

You need OMC special tool part #045417, $175 at any BRP dealer.

there is nothing special about the plug socket to remove those plugs, unless the one you have is unusally thick in the sides or something, any standard long plug socket will fit.
