Here's the story... got engine (20HP blue band 2 cil 2 stroke), used it a few days, became more of a trouble to start, and sometimes 1 cylinder would die off until it totally stopped working and backfired (pulling cord back in) and shooting water up out of exhaust... finally got the courage to take it to bits, discovered both coils were cracked, so got new coils, sparkplugs, leads.... 2 healthy sparks now.. and now (after sitting with no sparkplugs in a shed for about 3 months) with no petrol/oil in it... i cant get it to start! first of all pulling the starter handle was REALLY tough, (no lubrication) and is now getting closer to normal (I used engine cleaner to rinse out some carbon deposit..)

All i can get it to do is a backfire through exhaust once in about 3-5 pulls....and i managed to get 2 fires from cylinder #2 after eachother (with #1 disconnected) got some easy start stuff, same result... nice spark, the coils are on the right cylinders... and i *think* there is fuel getting into the cylinder.. it smells of petrol, but is not really soaking wet.

Had the carb to bits, needles are fine, butterfly valves are fine.. pump diaphram appears okay

Anybody else had this problem? the carb is set 1½ a turn back (the mixture) like the manual says.. had anyone experienced something like this? please give me some advice.

Thanks
Daniel.

Daniel, It sounds like the timing it too far retarded, which is why it backfires through the exhaust. I would verify it is set correctly. Also, pull the spark plugs and lubricate the cylinders with some two-cycle oil. The motor should turn by hand smoothly, if the plugs are removed. You might want to do a compression test to assure it had at least 100 PSI. Then install the plugs and use a spray or squirt bottle to put some 50::1 Gas-oil mix into the carb throat. It should start for at least a few seconds. If no start condition persists it is likely timing or weak spark.

i got it to run over on 1 cylinder for about 20 seconds today.... but the second one did not pick up along, and it died after 20 seconds....after that it went back to backfiring through exhaust... the ignition is stator controlled, and as far as i can see it sparks just around TDC, the plugs are not soaking wet, but they do smell of petrol.

Oh, and it turns over just like normal again now..

Pull the flywheel and check the key, Mr. D. Sounds like you have sheared it and the flywheel has moved on the crank.

Good luck. :)
